Aloha! I'm a 35-year-old middle school mathematics teacher originally from Seattle, WA and Santa Maria, CA. I moved to O'ahu 4 years ago from Portland, OR, after I finished my Masters in Teaching at Lewis and Clark College. I am an 8th grade teacher in our neighborhood, Kalihi-Palama, at Dole Middle School. My wife, Blythe, hails from Kailua-Kona on the Big Island, though we met in Portland. She teaches Ballet and Modern Dance at the University of Hawaii.
We LOVE living on O'ahu! The weather is AMAZING, the vistas are gorgeous, the hiking thrilling, the beaches...inviting!
By bus or by bicycle, you can easily reach Chinatown, Downtown, Waikiki, the University of Hawaii, and many South Shore beaches from our house in Kalihi. Our house is close to the Honolulu International Airport (but NOT under the flight path!), Ft. Shafter, and Tripler Medical Center.
If you are going to venture out in a vehicle, O'ahu has so much to offer. The North Shore has huge surf, tasty shrimp trucks, and gorgeous, secluded beaches. West Oahu has hot, secluded beaches with dolphins and whale viewing, and great snorkling! Hiking abounds all around the island, and I can recommend favorite spots. One of my favorite activities is to take my motorcycle around the entire island, and stop at some of the famous shrimp trucks along the way. Fun times!
Art galleries, live music, fresh food markets, unique shopping, restaurants and nightlife await in Chinatown, just a couple miles from our home. Alternatively, explore the largest outdoor mall in the world- Ala Moana- or hit Kalakaua and Kuhio avenues in Waikiki for nightclubs, shopping, and dozens of restaurants to suit any palate.
I hope you come stay at our Streamside Urban Oasis and experience the Aloha of the island of O'ahu, the Gathering Place.
My personal favorite travel destinations:
Big Sur, CA
Tofino, Vancouver Island
Lake Tahoe, CA
Olympic Peninsula, WA
Redwood National Park
Zion National Park
The rest of the Hawaiian Island Chain!
