Just plain ol' folks who love animals. We're from the southeast U.S. and have been living here in Costa Rica for 10 years. Our lives revolve around helping homeless, orphaned and abused animals.
We had a fantastic time at Frances and Bruce's beautiful home. It was truly a home away from home. They couldn't have made us feel any more welcome and having all the animals around was absolutely wonderful. We will savor our visit for a very long time.
Remarkable stay and hosts. Frances and Bruce are truly making a wonderful contribution in the world of animals. They tirelessly have dedicated their lives to helping battered animals. Their home has the most incredible view possible and gorgeous and comfortable. We could not have had a better stay. Thanks Bob
It is really difficult to find people with good hearts these days . This couple were really speciall in every way . Bless their hearts N keep up the good work ♥ Casey N Yogi from the beautiful FL Keys ♥
This is a Fabulous place to stay! The house is incredible, the bed was very comfy right down to the pillows, the views were spectacular and the dogs and cats, were always excited to see us! Our time with Bruce and Frances and various visiting family members, was very special. They all became like our own family. It was a tearful departure! We had just a wonderful time and absolutely loved the dogs. We have two dogs and three cats of our own and could easily (and may still) have taken two of the dogs home with us! Maybe on our next visit! This is a fantastic place and very relaxing if you have the time to just sit and take in the incredible beauty that surrounds you. Bruce and Frances are very warm and welcoming people that just make you want to spend time with them. We felt totally at home here. Wish it were our own home! The weather was perfect, warm during the day but always a beautiful breeze. You don't need air conditioning. It is just perfect weather. Just down the road is a lovely little coffee shop with the most incredible views into the mountains and you can see Bruce and Frances' place from the counter inside the coffee shop. Great iced coffee! I can't say enough good things about our stay here. I have pictures on my iPad that I show anyone and everyone who will stand still and listen! I don't think people really "get" it unless they have been here. But those who have been, really get it!
Couldn't have been better! A sincerely warm welcome from a wonderful couple, a lovely room in a beautiful house, one of the most spectacular views I've ever, and an abundance of happy, furry friends - I'm going to miss it all!
When they say their home is your home, they mean it, and to let them know if I needed anything - well, there was no need because they'd thought of everything and then some. Thank you both for an amazing stay. I can't wait to come back!
There are not enough superlatives to describe the helpfulness and hospitality showed to my wife and I by Frances and Bruce and all the delightful four-legged children we got to befriend and enjoy. We are exploring beautiful Costa Rica as a more permanent destination, and their open and honest advice was a tremendous help. Bruce even gave us a wonderful tour of some possible neighborhoods around Atenas before introducing us to Kay's Gringos Postres, the local expat hangout. We hope we shall end up in one of them in the next year or two.
Their house should be declared a national treasure, and our room and bed and shower/spa were all 5-star!! But we had the greatest time just hanging out with them each morning or evening over a cup of coffee or sangria. Truly fascinating and delightful people. Great ideas on sight-seeing as well. We hope to be able to visit again after the first of the year.
So if you have heard of Atenas and want to check it out, or just want a great central location from which to explore the central valley or the central Pacific coast via the newest and best highway in all of Costa Rica, with surroundings and treatment that will make you think you are royalty, then stop looking -- this is the place!
We immensely enjoyed our stay with Frances and Bruce. Their kindness and hospitality made us feel welcomed and at home. The room my two daughters and I stayed in was spacious and quite comfortable. The house was clean and airy, and the large windows made it easy to enjoy the spectacular views from almost anywhere in the house. The pets were fun to be around, but were not intrusive. The house is located in one of the nicest communities of Costa Rica -- a great opportunity to see a beautiful place that isn't geared toward tourism. We are so glad that we picked this area as one of our destinations. We would stay here again!
Frances and Bruce welcomed us as last-minute guests. Frances was very responsive and helpful with this. Room was nice & clean and there's a gorgeous view from their home. Wonderful, sincere people! They do great work helping animals in need. Be prepared to be greeted by a whole troop of furry friends! (Dogs are well-behaved and loving, nothing out of control)
Frances y Bruce nos ayudaron mucho con nuestro viaje que hicimos al ultimo momento. El cuarto fue bien y limpio y hay una vista preciosa desde su casa. Gente muy buena y sincera! Ayudan a muchos animales maltratados. Espera recibir un bienvenido por un grupo completo de amigos pequenos! (Los perros se portan bien y son muy carinosos, nada demasiado loco)
Beautiful place with great people, cute fuzzy babies, and a WOW view!
Frances and Bruce were lots of fun, and we have a lot of respect for how Frances runs her rescue shelter. She and Bruce really love animals, and they help take care of the neighbor's and other animals when needed. I'm so blessed to see someone doing this kind of work, and doing it well.
Our introduction to the many babies was so great. One decided to just forgo the introductions, and immediately laid on his back with tummy up to let us know exactly where he stood...or should I say lay? Tummy rubs and back scratches gave us a doggy "fix", since we left our two Poms at home with friends while we traveled. I will tell you that all the babies were extremely friendly and very well behaved.
We were taken to one of their favorite local restaurants on our first night and had a delicious meal. Our entertainment was a very dramatic thunder and lightning storm, of which was extremely beautiful with the view they have, when we got back to their house. Nothing deterred us from a good time, and we talked about their life in Costa Rica, family and friends.
The room was beautiful, with a sunken bathtub, which was extremely necessary after our zip-line jungle and waterfall tour of 6 hours! The bed was very comfortable, and we slept as soundly as a cat!
Our only regret is that we didn't make more time to stay with this lovely couple. We will do so on our next trip. I hope you do the same!

What an amazing place! Frances and Bruce are the most welcoming and lovely hosts we could have asked for. The went out of their way for us and we wished we could have stayed with them for longer. Their house is beautiful with the most stunning view of the Costa Rican mountains. And the fur kids! We were in dog and cat heaven! What lovely bundles of cuteness! We loved every single one of them. At this time Frances has 10 dogs and 4 cats. They were all so friendly, we miss them! The room we stayed in was spacious and spotlessly clean with our own big bath, shower and hot water (which you don't always get in Costa Rica). Frances is a truly inspirational woman for the work she does for the animals and she has so many interesting stories to tell about her animal rescues. If you love animals then stay here, you won't regret it.
JoRay was an awesome guest. From the first moment she was so sweet, polite and helpful. She was great with the other guests, and we had a housefull, and she paid attention to details... Noticing what needed to happen and jumping right in to do it! She came to a coffeehouse I was hosting and jumped right in to set up food, mica, chairs and I don't think I could have gotten it all done without her! Am glad she found a room nearby permanently since she would be handy to have around!
Frances and her daughter and friend are utterly charming, friendly, neat and considerate guests. Frances even dedicated several hours to evaluating and giving us expert advice on our dog's health problem! Needless to say, our welcome mat will always be out for this compassionate and wise woman.
Kitten, as i know her, is a great person and a super rescuer. Anything she does is done with care and consideration

I am a veterinarian who has been working with Frances for many years helping the most helpless animals. She moved to Costa Rica because of the lack of animal rescue there. She has helped so many animals and worked so hard. Adoptions there are not like here in the US where they can get decent adoption fees. Frances must raise all her own money to support these dogs and cat including veterinary care not to mention the food. And on top of that her home is beautiful and full of four-leggeds that LOVE some extra attention. You will have a great time and get lots of (dog) kisses!
One of the best rescuers I know! This is a person who goes above and beyond, no matter what type of animal it is!
Amazing people with one of the most beautiful places on the planet. You will not be disappointed!!
If you love dogs, cats, a beautiful home with a spectacular view (including gorgeous sunsets), AND warm, helpful, intelligent folks, you'll want to stay here. Frances and Bruce and the furkids are the best. I LOVE staying there.
If you love intellligent witty conversation, incredibly beautiful surroundings, and the friendly attentions of well mannered furry hosts, this is vacation heaven. Add to this convenience and a great cause...why would you stay anywhere else?
Frances and her family are long time friends, and I have had the joy of several visits with them in Costa Rica. The home and room are MORE clean and comfortable than you can imagine - and there are a wonderful group of fur kids there to entertain you. Their home is a place where each person can be his/her own authentic self, and be totally accepted as family. If you want to relax, travel, visit, or whatver, you are totally free to do so, in the MOST loving and beautiful place ever !!!! Go once, and it can become a wonderful habit :-)
The Jones' home is on top of a beautiful mountain and their back porch has the most spectacular views you'll ever see! You can see the valley below and watch the tropical wildlife from a very comfortable rocking chair on their back porch. On a nice day you can see the Pacific ocean. It's one of the best views!! Bruce & Frances welcome you into their home like you are family. Frances and Bruce are such nice people and they are so much fun to be around! You feel very relaxed hanging out in their gorgeous home that is impeccably clean and comfortable. If you like dogs then this is your place! Frances and Bruce have such big hearts that they rescue the homeless or orphaned dogs and cats that are in need. The dogs are all very sweet and welcome you to their home with wagging tails. Atenas is cute little town where the weather is always comfortable. They have fun little cafe's and restaurants and it's not touristy which I love. You are going to have a relaxing vacation while staying in Frances & Bruce's gorgeous home with breathtaking views and lots of happy dogs to greet you!
I am a very close friend of the Jones' and love them and all of the little Fuzzbutts (Dogs). We have been friends for seven years and have spent a lot of time with them. They have huge hearts and when it comes to helpless animals they go all out to see them fully taken care of.They have never to my knowledge turned even one away. They have the most beautiful view from their porch you will ever see. So love animals, love meeting knew and wonderful people and a great place to stay this is the place. Kay Costello
The Jone's have established and currently run the Lighthouse Animal Rescue. They use their own person time, money and energy to reach out, save and protect animals of all types. They also take time to educate the public about pet ownership and care.
When animals are in danger they come to the rescue. They have a happy home full of energy and with spectacular views all the way out to the Pacific Ocean. There is no shortage of excitement nor peaceful tranquility at their home and rescue mission.
I have visited them twice and plan to come back again and again.
May you have the opportunity to share in their love and generosity as I did.
