We enjoyed out stay at Rural Luxury! David gave us directions to his place which I thought would be difficult to find since it's in a rural area but with the help of the GPS it was fairly easy. The GPS will take you to South Kopua Road corner and then from there it's about 10 minutes away and his directions were easy to follow ( a couple of turns from South Kopua Road). Remember this is Rural so it has very much a country feel to it which is what makes it have the charm of Hawaii! The place was decorated exquisitely with Hawaiian wood. Very Nicely done with a very comfortable homey feeling. You watch t.v. from the bed in how the room is arranged, which added to it's cozziness. There is a dining room table to eat at and a sofa. He had brochures of things to do on the table. He has two dogs. They are quiet. One dog name Zsa Zsa is a very happy dog and very eager to greet visitors. The other dog is old and keeps to himself. His yard is surrounded with beautiful flowers! There are crocky frogs at night and they are rather loud and constant. It may bother some, but it didn't bother my friend and I. The water to drink is bottled and the water to take a shower is from a water catchment system. It's cool at night which is great! And it's located about 30 minutes or so from the volcano so it's very convenient that you could even go back to see the volcano at night. The place had all the things that you would find at home to make a meal and eat a meal. David had papaya and fruits for us to eat in the refrigerator. His wife also gave us delicious strawberries to eat. We are very thankful that we stayed there and for them being such wonderful host!
We stayed at the “Rural Luxury near a Volcano” location from David and Bonnie, near Mountain View, Hawaii just this week. It is located conveniently between Hilo and the Volcano National Park. This was our first AirBnB experience and if they are all like this we’re all in. This is a location in the country. It was very quiet with no traffic noise. The road in was all paved. David and Bonnie were friendly and helpful.
We found it to be a wonderful place to stay and wouldn’t hesitate to return. The queen bed was comfortable, and there was a sleeper couch which we didn’t use. Everything was modern and well kept. The kitchen and bathroom were new and spotless. Both were well supplied. It was “ready to move in” as they supplied condiments, and coffee. Even had brown sugar for my oatmeal and, bottled drinking water. They thoughtfully provided a fruit bowl with papayas, local tasty, small bananas and oranges our first night. There were fresh flowers and some plants as well.
The kitchen had utensils, pots and pans and everything we needed. There were plentiful towels, shampoo and conditioner, a new bar of soap in the bathroom and lotion.
The décor was pleasing, and comfortable. Basic Dish satellite was available in the bedroom and the available Wifi was fast. There were a few extras there to borrow each day, like an ice chest, beach towels, and umbrellas.
We wanted a place to ourselves so I was at first concerned that our lodging was the upstairs to their home. I was quickly at ease because the external private stairs allowed us to come and go freely. The house is built rock solid so I didn’t feel we had to step lightly being upstairs. And, David assured me not to worry about it at all. After a few hours I found it ended up not being a concern to me in any way.
They have a friendly dog that did not bark. Not an issue.
I’d recommend this location without hesitation.
David and Bonnie were very accommodating and friendly hosts. The first night we arrived, they showed us around the apartment and even had lots of brochures, menus, and other touristy materials for us to review.
They are very hospitable and provided everything that we needed, soaps, towels, etc. Even a cooler and a beach towels!
Our stay was outstanding. The property is convenient to explore the whole east side of the island (Hilo, Volcanoes, Puna), while being nice and secluded at night. The apartment itself was spacious, beautifully decorated (the pictures don't do it justice), and had everything you could need including umbrellas, flashlights, and stuff for cooking. Dave and Bonnie were very welcoming and helpful, but generally left us to explore on our own unless we asked. A great place to stay on the big island.
Staying at David's place was perfect for us! We were able to explore the Volcanoes and Puna region really easily from here. The place itself is spotless and incredibly thoughtfully stocked with everything you could imagine. David even provided umbrellas for the unpredictable weather and also torches for exploring the volcano park at night. Super cool people, super cool place and two awesome dogs too!
Dear David and Bonnie, we had a fantastic time at your place and we were so sorry we couldn't say goodbye! We absolutely loved your place, it is sooooo pretty with so many beautiful details and fresh flowers. It's a beautiful apartment with a great lanai and very romantic. You and Bonnie have been fantastic hosts, so nice. We were sorry we didn't book for more nights. I wish you all the best and hope to return one Day! Aloha luca, linda and Elena
Everything was wonderful, David and Bonnie's place was beautiful and they were so kind! The unit was very spacious and clean and was exactly what we wanted on our vacation. Our only wish was that we could have stayed longer. Highly recommended!
Passion, attention to detail, and a great amount of thought put into this place, made our stay THE BEST on airbnb so far. The hospitality of David and Bonnie was as sweet as their papayas!! Very convenient for HVNP. We will definitely stay here when we visit the area next.
David and Bonnie are amazing hosts! They were both there to greet us at their home and provided us with lots of local tips. They also have their place listed on (website hidden), and only recently gave AirBNB a whirl (so I would imagine that there are a ton of reviews on that website too). Their place is a beautiful oasis just 5 minutes from the main highway (double check that your GPS matches David's directions, we took a weird detour while following the GPS...completely our fault though).
The place was really perfect for us! It has a clean, well equipped kitchen. They had spices and basic supplies in the kitchen to help guests out of a bind. The bed is huge and very comfortable. The sound of the coqui frogs actually helped me sleep! The bathroom also had some helpful first-aid supplies and toiletries.
The hosts are extremely thoughtful, and the place really had everything we needed. There was a fruit-bowl waiting for us with delicious pineapple and apple bananas grown right in their backyard! Not to mention a gorgeous flower arrangement. There was also an extensive collection of helpful pamphlets and a binder full of restaurant menus with recommendations.
Final tip: If you can, buy your fruit from the farmer's markets. It's way cheaper than the supermarkets. Bag of papayas for $2? Yes please =).
Would definitely stay there again! Mahalo!
