Shanti Nilayam is a beautiful place! The hosts Mark, Stephanie and baby Oliver are incredibly friendly, open, and generous and are so welcoming of their guests that it is hard not feel like you're a part of the family. I came for a week but I ended up staying for two.
The home is a large heritage home built in the prime of the East India Company (there's even a plaque on the wall of the house to prove it!) and is surrounded by a carefully tended fruit and vegetable garden. If you've never had the chance to try tropical fruits, this is the best place to try it - nothing better than homegrown fruits! Depending on the seasons, you could have some jackfruit, guava or papaya (paw paw).
I stayed in one of the double rooms in the independent cottage and it was well equipped with an ensuite (with hot water), a ceiling fan (perfect for the monsoon season. There is also an a/c for hot summer season), and free wifi (available throughout the house). Towels, clean bedsheets were all readily provided upon my arrival. The room is really big for the lone traveller but I'm not complaining :) the house also has 24 hour electricity, which I hear is a rare thing for Mysore.
Breakfast is provided in your stay on the patio every morning and offers porridge, fresh seasonal fruits, yoghurt, and even eggs cooked to your liking. Tea is available all day and Coffee is also available upon request. Laundry services are available as well for a small fee (washing only).
If you're here to do the yoga thing, the KPJAYI Shala is just 10 minutes walk away (safe to walk). There are also other yoga spaces around the Shala that offer yoga classes. Or, you can even opt for lessons with Mark (authorised Ashtanga teacher) or Stephanie - mats are provided.
Shanti Nilayam is especially perfect if you're new to Mysore (or India) and are looking for convenience and a real homey feel. Mark and Stephanie are residents of Mysore and know the ins and outs of the city; where to eat, how to assimilate with the local community, how to get around etc. Even if you're not new to the city, I highly recommend staying here! It isn't just a place to rest your head at night but truly a space to connect and will be a lovely part of your travel memories.
Mark's place is very nice. I put my friends there for one night when they were visiting. The place is right off the main road and very easy to find. It is very quiet and has a lot of plants around. The room was clean. I didn't get a chance to interact with Mark but he made arrangements to ensure we had a comfortable stay. I recommend his place!
Hi Samhitha, I am glad your friends enjoyed Shanti Nilayam and Liron took good care of them, I hope to see you in MYsore some day soon so I can personally welcome you to our home..
This is a nice place, artfully decorated. We were 7 members, stayed in 3 rooms. Liron was our host since Mark was traveling. He was helpful and offered us jackfruit from the tree in the backyard. We did not try the breakfast since we went to a Mylari Dosa place. This was the first home stay experience for some members of our family and they all enjoyed the stay.
I am glad your family enjoyed the homestay experience and I look forward to welcoming you again personally when you come down for Mylari Dosa next time.
I stayed at shanti nilayam with my wife and kids as part of a stopover at mysore. Mark's place is beautifully crafted and gives you a retro styled experience. Shanti nilayam is centrally located and very easy to reach. We stepped out for a couple of lunches and dinners and came across multiple options in a 2 km radius. We simply loved Silva and sultan, marks's dogs who are extremely friendly. Ashok serves up a hearty breakfast and it gets you going for the day. Please remember this is not a hotel and you will like the experience.
Glad you enjoyed Shanti Nilayam, hope to welcome you personally next time.
Perfect location for a yoga related visit to Mysore. Room exactly as described. Tasty breakfast, peaceful garden, lovely few days. Would definitely return!
Glad you enjoyed your stay at Shanti Nilayam and my people were able to take care of you in my absence, hope to see you next time..
Mark was very gracious in accepting our last minute request to stay at the 'Peaceful house'. My wife & I enjoyed our shanti time here away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Thanks for whipping up a late night snack when everything was shut in the neighbourhood. Lily enjoyed her yoga class in the morning and was greatly inspired by Mark's teaching to further her practise. Overall we had a great time in this oasis of calm and look fwd to coming back if our paths cross again.
Shanti Nilayam -Here you feel like at home. Mark and Stephani are very helpful and friendly. Lila and Ashoke served the best breakfasts in Mysore. Lila taught us a few of his regional dishes. We will cook in Poland:-) Beautiful garden, two friendly dogs who guarding the property. The house is situated close to the school. The morning walks were a pleasure. We didn't replace this place for any hotel in the area. Everything here was excellent. Everyone is very friendly, helpful, and lots of fun. Perfect place and would 100% come back again.
Everything here was excellent. Mark and Stephanie are great hosts, and the house is made to have you feel right at home. For passing through Mysore on a trip, or coming here for yoga, this is the best place to stay. Everyone is very friendly, helpful, and lots of fun. Perfect place and would 100% come back again.
Shanti Nalayam is very well located in a quieter part of Mysore and very close to the main Yoga schools. It's quite the Oasis!
Mark and Stephany, our hosts, were extremely friendly, energetic and welcoming. Mark taught a great vigorous ashtanga class every morning before breakfast. He definitely has the region wired and he took us under his wing helping us enormously to plan the rest of our travels as we were at a loss what to do with the little time we had left in India.
The organic breakfasts were delicious and the staff very friendly and helpful. We had one of the rooms in the main house which was spartan but quite spacious and comfortable with a bathroom next door.
Overall a great experience I would recommend to anyone!
Mark et sa femme sont très accueillants et agréables.Leur jolie maison est à quelques km des centres d'intérêts de Mysore. Il y fait bon vivre dans une ambiance très zen(coirs de yoga).
Mark and Stephanie are very easy and fun to host! They understand how to live cooperatively and keep everything smooth. They took full advantage of our place and kept everything clean.
Also, Mark gave me some private yoga Lessons ~~ Something I needed very badly!
