This was our second time to stay at La Terraza and we enjoyed both times. This year we met Katie, who was working long hours painting and updating the third floor rooms. Although she was working on deadline due to new guests arriving; she took time to make sure we were comfortable and happy - which we were!! We stayed on the second floor and were pleased with the cleanliness and privacy. Thanks Katie!!
The place is nicely situated in the main part of town, 3 blocks from the beach and 1 away from all of the local bars and restaurant. The host was prompt and allowed for us to check in quickly. The space is a bit older and felt like it was used to be a hostel accommodation, locks on every bedroom door. It was a good base camp for our group of friends during our SJDS adventure. Pictures are somewhat deceptive as it is a bit older and the beautiful hammock turned into a regular plain old hammock. Otherwise, it was an overall pleasant stay.
First, I have to say that this review is actually for the 3rd floor apartment listed by Katie. Due to a double booking, she graciously offered us an upgrade to the 3rd floor instead of the Garden Apartment.
If you are looking for a hotel-like experience, this may not be the apartment for you. The building is a bit dated, but it has a character and charm to it that goes along with it.
The balcony is quite nice, and we spent a lot of time out there, either reading in the hammock, or just people watching with a cup of coffee. We also kept the doors to the balcony open while we were home during the day, which kept a cool breeze blowing through the apartment, but also let in a good amount of dust.
The location in San Juan Del Sur is good if you want to be near all of the action. You can walk to just about anywhere in town in less than 10 minutes, and being just two blocks away from the market meant that we could get our produce pretty easily. Also, there are two small convenience stores right below the apartment and a great pizza place (Mauricio's) right around the corner.
Katie was there to greet us upon arrival, and managed to make a reservation for us at El Timon's cultural night, which we highly recommend. There were a few nice ladies that operated the desk and kept up with the cleaning, etc. that were also very helpful throughout our stay.
There is an ample amount of security and we felt safe during our week-long visit here. Overall, we'd recommend this as an upgrade over the many hostels that are all over SJDS.
Second time staying in this building. Everything was great. Balcony was nice and a nice breeze at night. There are no AC's in the bedrooms so be aware for hotter seasons but the air flow in the place is very good so you should be fine. Safe location, blocks from everything. Oh, and freshly cut fruit bowls for less than a buck (20 cords) a block away. Unbeatable!
Thank you for returning to stay with us. We hope to see you again. Next time remember to book either the Third Floor or the Garden Apartment, they both have A/C.
We stayed on the third floor and it's a very good place to stay in SJDS. The view out over the city is nice, and sunsets from the balcony are a treat. The intangibles of this location are really great. It's hard to describe what a perfect location this is: very close to the central market and night life, right in the middle of it all. Katie, our host, was also super accommodating.
We got lost on the way here and arrived at 11:00pm instead of the 3:00pm we had agreed on. It took all of five minutes to borrow a call from a local on the sidewalk next-door and Katie was there! She definitely went above and beyond on that one.
I give Katie and the whole La Terraza Guest House a strong recommendation.
I guess the disappointment on my face told the story. Katie was so nice. She did her best to make our stay pleasant. She called someone to fix the AC unit in the bedroom immediately and she had an extra modem installed so we could get internet. She even threw in doing a load of laundry, (an $8 savings). The apartment was not at all what I expected. What hit me first was that it was dirty. I sat in a plastic chair the whole time because the sofa and overstuffed chair were so dirty. The kitchen was dirty, empty beer bottles were in a box sitting in the floor, the faucet barely trickled out any water. The skillets were old, flaking, Teflon, making them unusable. There was only one sheet on the bed, which would have been fine except that my boyfriend wanted the AC on all night. He did get me a sheet off the other bed, that helped. On the bright side, it was located in the heart of San Juan Del Sur and the shower was forceful/tepid - not cold - water. Also, a large jug of drinking water was supplied.
Perfectly located spot! We were really happy with the location and proximity to restaurants, bars and shops. We had originally planned to do some cooking but everything was so close (be sure to check out Barrio Cafe for breakfast!) that we didn't eat at the condo once in our five days there. Can't speak to the kitchen ammenities, but the showers had good water pressure and the towels were so fluffy and the living room and patio were the perfect gathering spots!
The place itself, as advertised, is very basic but fit our needs. The patio and hammock were lovely and Zen Yoga was wonderful to have so close. It's a perfect place to relax, start the night, and end the night (with the rooftop patio). It was also nice to be close to Casa de Oro, as they run a shuttle to nearby beaches and have various other excursions you can book through them.
Great location, close to the beach. I couldn't meet the owners. The place is simple but fully equipped, all you need for a great vacations.
This is the pace to stay if you are in San Juan del Sur. Very nice apartment, everything is walking distance. You are right in town.
It's a very tasteful decorated place. Everything you need is available.
Good mattress and shower which was a nice bonus for us since we are traveling through Nicaragua on a low budget so that felt so wonderful.
San Juan DS is a great little town.
Communication with owners was good. There is basically always someone available in the front part of the house that can answer questions or help out if needed.
Me and my brother stayed in 2 bedroom apartment for 4 nights. There was a nice kitchen with everything we needed. It was clean, with a/c in the bedrooms. Nice living room and great location. No complaints except for the power outages that sometimes happen in SJDS but not the fault of the owner. Would stay here again.
