I travel a lot and would much rather stay in a quirky, beautiful home than I would an impersonal hotel (million-threadcount sheets notwithstanding). I like getting to know how cities work and what the people who live there are all about. Airbnb helps me do that.
I'm a respectful and responsible guest and I expect the same of the people who stay in my home. Even if I'm not travelling for work, I'm usually writing something or other, so I need somewhere with space to write (and a wireless connection). I also love having a bit of outdoor space. As a host I can offer a beautiful home in super-central London (Barbican in zone 1) with plenty of light, a balcony, and all the usual conveniences (wifi, telephone, hair dryer, food processor, top-quality speakers). And of course, as a journalist I take in a lot of news, so there are plenty of news channels on my TV.
In the past I have travelled extensively through Western Europe and North America, and last year I first made inroads to Eastern Europe. This year I have spent a fair bit of time in the Middle East, and I expect that to continue into the future.
