I'm originally from Colorado and have been in SF for 15 years. I am politically active, a working mother and love to get out of the city.
We had a great time in Michelle's house in San Francisco! The house has a very nice feel of an old but very pleasant place. The neighborhood is full of fancy old houses, great sightseeing place. Nearby is the shopping area, with numerous buttiques. There is a tram line nearby, or you can just walk down the hill to the Mission district for more fun.
Our family had a very pleasant stay in Michelle's flat--sun filled living room, comfortable beds, good shower, terrific location. Everything was exactly as described. We are book lovers & the extensive library made us feel right at home. Michelle and her family were away, but it was extremely easy to get access to the flat. Michelle's house manual answered any questions that came up.
I was visiting SF for a few weeks and was bringing my folks with me. I was really happy to see that everything just worked out that great. Michelle has a very nice big flat in Noe Valley just next to the Mission. There are a lot of nice Shops, Restaurants and Bars around the area, Muni right around the corner and Michelle made us the stay super easy. We had a very nice time and would love to stay with Michelle again.
We really enjoyed staying at Michelle's house. Our little girl had an instant stash of toys to play with, which was great. The house and neighborhood are quiet and easy to reach. In family-friendly Noe Valley, 24th Street is around the corner which has everything to offer, including good restaurants, a Whole Foods grocery store and several playgrounds.
Michelle as a host was responsive and nice, and we can definitely recommend her flat.
I stayed at Michelle's apartment with three friends, and I don't think we could have had a better time there. Her flat is spacious, inviting, and also just plain interesting. It was very clean, but not sterile, and easily accommodated all four of us with room to spare. We particularly enjoyed being able to sit together in a large living room and do some cooking in a generously sized kitchen. Michelle's instructions were fantastic and she was really great about communicating and making herself accessible should we have any questions. Location-wise, the apartment is in a quiet but central neighborhood really close to J-line and a fifteen minute walk to the BART. I would more than happily stay here again, and it's pretty unbeatable price-wise. The one drawback worth mentioning is less of a drawback than a quirk of old houses: the split bathroom (the toilet in one room and shower/sink in another) was both good and bad.
Stay here. You won't regret it!
Lovely house, in a quiet area of SF, connection to town OK.
Unfortunately the two beds for our teenager boys were quite awful, they could not sleep on it, so we didn’t sleep very well. Taking that in account it was rather expensive.
Michelle's place was perfect for our family. Our six and three year old girls loved playing with the toys and reading the kids' books and there was plenty of space for all of us to sleep comfortably. Beautiful, light-filled front room for hanging and watching the world go by. They even left us some food in the fridge! We walked to good coffee shops, had great restaurant recommendations from Michelle, and had an awesome time in the Dolores Park and Mission Street playgrounds (a must if you have kids). We also drove down nearby Hill St....like driving off a cliff. Cheap thrills for the whole family. Great spot for families visiting San Fran. Stop looking and book it.
Staying at Michelle's pad was lovely. It gave us an instant home after traveling for 20 hours from Australia. It gave us a chance to readjust our internal clocks smoothly and in our own time. With three kids in tow ranging from 11 months to four year olds an amazing range of kids toys and books kept everyone occupied for hours, especially as everyone was on a different schedule.
The house was well prepared and clean. We could use everything in the house including teas, spices, dishwashing liquid and laundry detergent. Having an iMac with internet kept the man of the families happy. And the quality pots and pans were a delight for the ladies. And nothing we really missed but a toaster.
All in all there was enough rooms to chill out and move around and not be in everybody's face, which is necessary if you travel with a few people as we did.
We also loved the neighborhood with great coffee at Martha & Bros, bagels in all kinds next door, great shopping all around 24th street and Valencia Street, and fantastic playgrounds 5 min walk along church street. The tram is also just around the corner so that the city is only 10 min away.
We wished we could have stayed longer and thoroughly enjoyed everything in our one week San Francisco. We'd surely come again and can truly recommend to stay at Michelle's place.
Host: Michelle responded quickly to all my questions and provided helpful information. The information she left for us about the house was also helpful. Michelle was very friendly and flexible regarding our later-than-expected arrival.
Beds: Our group used the king size in the main bedroom, the queen airbed, and the full size fold-down bed in the dining room (bigger than a twin bed). All were comfortable. The couch in the living room is more the size of a loveseat and so it is only adequate for younger children or very short adults to sleep on. We put the cushions on the floor on top of a throw rug to accommodate a 5’10” teenager, and that was comfortable for him.
Bathroom: Filtered water in the shower, and still good water pressure! The shower curtain around the claw-foot tub is a little narrow, but it’s made of heavy plastic, so it doesn’t get sucked in when the shower is running, as thinner shower curtains do. The sink is old and can’t be made to look really clean even though it was clean. I was glad to see a mixer tap (one faucet instead of separate hot and cold faucets, which the sink was originally set up for). The sink drain was slow. My husband cleaned it out a bit, but it was still somewhat slow. The toilet is an amazingly efficient low-flush model. The full door knob is missing on the inside of the door, which can make it tricky for younger children to open the door from the inside.
Dining table has 4 chairs. A fifth person sat on a tall stool to play board games. We didn’t try to have all 6 people around the table since we only ate breakfast there. There’s a counter and stool in the kitchen for a quiet early riser (it is right beside the dining room, with a curtain dividing kitchen and dining room/bedroom).
Kitchen: Well stocked with pans, knives, mix-and-match dishes. The toaster oven, which takes a while to toast, needs to be watched so bread doesn’t burn (as Michelle’s instruction pages warn). Michelle had left plenty of space for us to put our food in the fridge. Water filter, coffee maker, microwave, and stove top work fine. We didn’t use the oven. Excellent clothes washing machine.
Living room and decor: We found the several realistic skeleton decorations in the living room and toilet room disconcerting. The living room and fainting room were quite drafty. Okay in warmer weather, maybe a heating challenge in winter. Front curtains don’t quite cover the windows. Nevertheless, the living room (without the skeletons) is pleasant. We appreciated being able to use the computer in the adjoining den.
Parking: Street parking for a minivan was a challenge but we found spots within 2 or 3 blocks. Street cleaning on certain days and one-hour meters on the nearby commercial street meant having to move the van twice (three parking spots) one morning while we were packing up. The up-side is that the house is on a level street, not a steep hill like some of the surrounding streets.
Overall: Typical charming older SF flat—hardwood floors (wish I’d brought my slippers), walls and doors repainted many times, lovely high ceilings. Lived-in clean, but not vacation rental/hotel clean. There was a smell throughout the house. It smelled like a cat although we saw no cat hair or litter box. Perhaps it was the natural gas? A couple of night lights and a lamp near the fold-down bed in the dining room would have been nice. Dimmer switch in living room and partial dimmer switch in dining room helped. The apartment was appropriately priced as the least expensive “entire home/apt” option available for our dates and allowed us to have a comfortable, affordable, private place to stay while showing our Canadian guest around the city. Thank you, Michelle and family!
