Eddie was one of my favourite guests recently. Easy to contact for check-in. He was a pleasure to chat with and has a wealth of experiences and wisdom from across Canada and around the world. A true world traveller with impressive an academic career. Any host would be lucky to have Eddie.
This is my first negative review, after hosting over 100 satisfied guests this past year. Last month Eddie reserved a room here for 23 nights, apparently without reading our description/viewing photos which pretty clearly describe our unconventional space. After 1 night here he informed me he was leaving - he said the ceilings were too low, he didn't like the 'old-house smell', and that our many excellent reviews/rules caused him to expect a "pristine" environment; he then demanded an immediate cash refund for 21 days, citing his past reviews of other hosts as justification, which I view as a subtle threat. I explained we're not a 4-star hotel & that he couldn't reasonably expect "pristine" for only $37/night. Our strict cancellation policy meant we weren't obligated to refund him, but I offered him a partial refund provided we could still rent the room out to others, however, he flat-out refused to "cancel" his reservation on AirBnB, so we couldn't possibly offer the room to others. I remain baffled by his choice.
Eddie did leave us a malicious & libelous review, I believe out of spite for not honouring his unreasonable demand for an immediate refund. I have sent photographic evidence of our space to AirBnB that clearly refutes Eddie's claims, for example:
Eddie claims the room has a "child-size chair" and non-functional "9-inch TV" - in fact, the working TV is quite large (20" screen), and the chair is adult. Eddie says we're a "hoarder's den" but anyone can read our past positive reviews - our house is full of vintage collectibles & artifacts that others clearly appreciate (in fact, Eddie's is the first negative review we've ever received). Eddie states we have 4 electric kettles (we have one), that our spices & tea are of undeterminable age (we use/replenish them regularly). The room he stayed in isn't "small, cramped, unventilated" - it's 162 square feet. All guests have freshly-laundered linens/towels & extras. He's correct we don't have locks on the bedrooms - we're not a hotel! - but saying it's because doors are warped is also untrue. Only the laundry area is 'unfinished', which has no bearing on the quality of his private room or the rest of the house. Upon arrival he also seemed perplexed that our 'kitchen provisions' didn't include eggs (we clearly state we provide coffee, tea, spices, condiments & cooking oil, but that guests must buy their own food).
It's unfortunate that Eddie didn't find our space satisfactory, but as he's chosen to fabricate a defamatory review (violating AirBnB's Content Guidelines), I can't endorse him to other hosts, who are encouraged to view our listings to see that Eddie's review is an astonishing anomaly. Unless you can offer Eddie a pristine hotel environment for under $40/night, and are willing to give him a full refund in exchange for a good review (violating AirBnB's Extortion Policy), I recommend you decline his request, lest you risk your good reputations being damaged by Eddie's counterfeit claims.

Eddie is a fantastic guest, has lived in so many places in the world, has so many facets to his complex personality, an intricate knowledge of people through the lenses of so many cultures, you find yourself in conversation with an anthropological philosopher disguised as tennis apasionado. Besides being discrete, courteous, independent and orderly. What more can one ask for! Highly recommended!
