It was a pleasure to host Federico. All went very smoothly and I think he enjoyed biking around.
Federico and May-Li were wonderful guests. They were extremely respectful, and quiet: we hardly heard them come and go! We appreciated their easy friendly way. They left the space in tidy condition and we hope to welcome them again. Highly recommended.
This was a great experience! Federico is welcome at any of my 100+ resorts any time.
Federico had stayed with us once before (see comments above), and I was very pleased when he elected to come back for a second visit, this time bringing his wife May-Li with him. People have a way of finding compatible mates, so that it was no surprise to find myself receiving two people who were a pleasure to greet, enjoyable to banter with for some spare moments, and who would clearly (and did in fact) take excellent care of both our apartment and our tranquility. May-Li took the unusual step of taking her shoes off at the base of the wooden, unberugged (yes, that’s a new word) staircase leading up to the apartment so that she would not risk waking anyone when they returned to the house at night: a particularly kind gesture of respect, given the temperature of the treads during the cold spell that coincided with their visit, but which did nothing to restrain their extended explorations of the city. Two other things I should mention, in relation to a couple of booby-traps that I unintentionally left for them (and which indicate no fault of good care on their part whatsoever). Firstly, these people are wonderfully easy going when pieces of the apartment show unexpected behavior – e.g. when a towel rod, or a plant that has become unbalanced for want of central planning, decides to make a bid for freedom and, in the same gesture, test the old assertion we all learn in grade school about 9.8 meters per second squared (pretty accurate, most of the time): no ensuing drama or complaints shatter the peace of the household as a result of these wanton acts of aggression. Secondly, these people simply find a workable temporary fix to the problem (taking good care of all parts and pieces, so that I can easily set everything right later), and then adapt and make do, unperturbed. In brief, Federico and May-Li are simply acting as responsible and pro-active home owners, taking excellent care of the house, and dealing intelligently and caringly with any unusual issues that might come up. And of course leaving everything in excellent shape when they make their exit. Any host should welcome this pair into their home with a high level of confidence and great pleasure. As for our house, the doors remain wide open for them.
It was a great pleasure to meet Federico and have him with us for a few days. He arrived with light baggage and bright and friendly spirit, and settled easily and quietly into the house, where he was evidently immediately comfortable. It was clear from just a quick interaction that Federico maintains a lively interest not just in the subjects that he formally teaches, but in a broad variety of other areas as well; and he thus easily makes conversation enriching and invigorating (without ever projecting anything resembling pretension). I was particularly happy that he took some minutes to talk to a student I was working with one morning, and to offer him encouragement and advice. Had one come in on the middle of the conversation, it would not have been obvious that these two had just met for the first time. His warmth and willingness to make links and build community with those who may unexpectedly cross his path indicates to me that Federico is uncommonly well suited to this model of staying in people’s homes while traveling. Though he is fully independent as a guest and clearly has no lack of things on his schedule, he seems naturally disposed and ready to exchange with people in a way that will be rewarding and comfortable to all participants. He was consistently quiet in his comings and goings, and he left the apartment so clean and without traces that had I not known that someone had arrived to spend some days there, I might not have even suspected, in passing or in the course of settling into the space to read, as I occasionally do on days when the apartment is unreserved, that anyone had even glanced at the place. Easily recommended to other homes, and absolutely welcome to visit us again at any time.
Federico was a wonderful guest. He left my apartment super clean. I'd love to have him back at any time!
Federico is an excellent guest, very friendly and reliable. I would recommend him without hesitation.
