Great little spot if you're exploring Waipio or the Honoka'a area. It's old but has a lot of character, great value for the money. Very quiet except for the frogs at night, which are quite soothing. Perfect spot to start a horseback ride into the valley in the morning.
Two things to be aware of - first, you will be asked to fill out a paper rental agreement separate from the website. I'm not sure if the things you agree to there supercede what you agree to on Air Bnb, but the owner requires this or asks you to cancel the booking, though with the strict cancellation it would cost you. Second, you will also be asked to leave an additional $10 in cash once you're there on top of what you pay through the website.
Our first time to Hawaii, very excited to be here! Since we come from the rain forest of East Texas this felt more like coming home. Very relaxed location, non busyness. Loved it!
Good location, for visiting waipio valley. It's in the same building as the ATV and horseback tours. It is a very secluded area though so there is no cell phone service or places to eat besides the very small deli in the same building that you are staying in. You are in the middle of the jungle so the insects and frogs are very loud at night. He also makes you fill out a contract. I know that he wants to protect his property from any incidents but I felt very uncomfortable giving him my credit card number especially for only a one night stay.
Perfect place before the Muliwai trail
The apartment was as advertised and check-in/out was very easy and the location was perfect- right at the Waipio Valley lookout.
This was a good place to spend one or two nights for exploring the Waipio Valley. It was very close to the lookout and trail, and there are tours right out of the gift shop in front of the apartment. This does however create a lot of noise/traffic around the apartment during the day, but it's very quiet at night. The apartment provided us with most of everything we needed, but the bed was a bit hard for me and the Roku wasn't working. It would also be nice to have a real couch to sit on too. Bill was easy to communicate with and provided good instructions.
My husband and I had a wonderful time in the Waipio Valley area. Bill's place was exactly as described. Perfect if you're just simply needing a place to sleep, shower, and eat. Keep in mind that you are on Big Island so it's less commercialized and luxurious than some of the other islands. Bring your mosquito repellent and don't be alarmed when you see geckos everywhere.
Overall the location of this place was ideal, it was very spacious, and had a nice outdoor setup. I would probably never stay here again do to not having any air conditioning. This was our first time visiting Hawaii and not being able to escape the heat and humidity was almost unbearable. I slept with an ice pack every night in attempts to cool down. The bedding and towels all smelled of mildew and in our attempts to wash everything we realized it was because the dryer didn't work properly and we were afraid to use it. The screens all need to be fixed or updated because the amount of bugs inside was unreal. I woke up with new spider bites/ mosquito bites every day. There were spiders and webs in all of the kitchen cabinets. And ants everywhere! It was definitely an experience. I was extremely uncomfortable every day that we were there. I will definitely do a hotel next time.
The Ohana that Bill provides is exactly as described. It is located at the back of the Waipio art gallery building. The cozy place is strategically located for those wishing to explore the Waipio Valley and Hamakua coast. I only add that this would not be an ideal place if you are allergic to mold. I don't mind not having any air conditioning because the surrounding air is wonderful. My criticism stems from the use of carpeting which has the propensity to become moist and harbor mold. Otherwise I feel that this place is a good bargin and it offers good amounts of privacy.
