Real nice place. Bill was always available via phone and text to answer questions. Easy to work with. The house had privacy, but also convenient location to town and airport. Highly recommended.
The house was very nice with excellent views and private. It would be nice if there where a few more amenities re: beach chairs, ice chest etc.... However there is a nice BBQ. Unfortunately the dishwasher was not working when we got there and Bill was unable to get it fixed in our two week stay. Which was a bummer since I brought my wife to HI for Mothers Day. All the dishes in cabinets where very dirty so we had to wash them all. Made me wonder how long the dishwasher had been broke. No compensation was offered. Since we paid a $50 cleaning fee I was a little disappointed. Coffee pot was not working when we got there either but Bill was nice enough to reimburse me for one i bought. I would stay there again but would want to be sure things where fixed. We cleaned everything the way it should have been when we arrived.
Overall I felt pretty underwhelmed by this place. Not that it is a bad place to stay, but it wasn't at all what I was expecting.
Firstly, communication with Bill was easy and very prompt and clear. There were no problems in this department. We never met Bill personally, but he was always available if needed.
The space: People complained of cockroaches, which is good to note but I kind of feel like you aren't going to get away from that no matter where you stay. I give the place a pass on that. However, all in all, the value of the place is pretty average. I think you would get about the same experience in a budget hotel as you do here (except you have to do some of your own cleaning). The bed was wildly uncomfortable (bows in the middle) and there was a pretty bad odor emitting near the laundry facility on the 2 days we were there. However on the positive side, the neighborhood is great and the location can't be much better. The big gotcha to me is that the Hawaiian tax is not baked into the price and you have to do some basic cleaning for checkout. Which is fine. I do my best to keep a place clean and gladly clean up after myself. But in the end the place cost us nearly double the initial price (after AirBNB fees and the Hawaiian state tax) and I feel like the value we got for what we paid just was incredibly average.
I am not totally sure how the Hawaiian tax works but I do know that other AirBNB's that we stayed in on the island did not collect additional fees from us outside of AirBNB. That kind of made me wary but whatever. I don't think I would stay here again but I think this place would be ideal if you were with a big group and rented out the entire place. There are a few rooms in the house and it seems like that would be a great setup. Its proximity to the beach and other amenities is definitely the strong suit.
We had a wonderful stay here! Bill was quick to respond with any questions and was able to alter accommodations for us last minute due to some travel changes. The unit was perfect for a simple no frills retreat after long days exploring the island. The unit was exactly as described, and was very clean and well maintained. Anyone complaining about "bugs" need to realize it's all part of the territory, and should go see the roaches at the ocean front $200/night condo my parents stayed in lol thanks for a wonderful stay, we will definitely be back!!!
Well, this is the worst experience that I have ever had in airbnb, first you have to sign some kind of agreement and then you need oh additional amount of money when you check in. Third, the place is not even clean enough for u to stay. The sheet in bed like 1 month not cleaned, have pet hair and food on top of it. I can only sleep with all my clothes on. I booked two nights but only stay for one, and moved out in early morning. I would highly recommend thinking through before you make reservations.
Bill's studio was clean and very convenient. Location is walking distance to a clean safe beach and just a quick 10 min ride up the street to downtown Kona!! Def will come back to this studio if available
Bamboo Hale was a wonderful surprise. It's much nicer than the photos show and in an awesome location with a beautiful view of the Pacific and practically walking distance from Waipio Valley. We were only able to stay one night--will stay longer next time!
Unfortunately, our weekend getaway was not at all what we expected after reading all the great reviews this place had.
My fiancé and I wanted to celebrate our anniversary on Kona side. After looking through the different Air B&Bs, we found Bill's studio, and thought it would be a perfect fit for us. Bill's house was beautiful and in a great location close to beaches and nightlife (pretty much for his description to the T) Upon arrival around 4:00 pm, the first thing we saw was a cockroach laying on its back in the middle of the floor, and it was still alive, but on its way to death. We are from Hilo, so we just tried to ignore that fact plus it was dying. No biggie. We left the studio at 4:30 pm then came back around 9:30/10PM to find more cockroaches crawling on the floor by the bed and on the walls. We killed around 5 cockroaches in less than an hour and found ant like flies around the sink. Sadly, our room had a lot of bugs, and we were not pleased.
After experiencing the bugs, we checked the beddings, and to our surprise the comforter was stained and the inner blankets and pillow cases had stains on them as well. It was very disappointing knowing that whoever was supposed to prepare our room, did not do a thorough job cleaning the sheets before we arrived.
We then realized that we did not feel comfortable sleeping there. So we contacted Bill via email. We told Bill that this studio is not going to work out for us because the reasons listed above. Bill's first response was to move us to a different room, which was a kind gesture, however after experiencing the bugs in our room, we didn't really want to stay in any of the other rooms in the house. After asking for a refund, Bill was very difficult with us and upset with us for not considering his other option. So, we ended up not staying the night and expected a full refund, but we never did.
In all honesty, Bill was very hard to work with. He made our experience using Air B&B a very unpleasant one. When my fiancé emailed Bill about refunding us our money, he was very upset and said we didn't give him the opportunity to fix it (at that time, we just really did not want to stay in any of the rooms).
To sum it all up, the place was obviously not prepared for our arrival. Bill did not want to refund our money because of these issues.
I wish I could recommend this place to others because of the great location to beaches and nightlife, but after our experience with the bugs, stained sheets, and Bill's attitude, there's hardly anything positive we could say.
This lovely home is STUNNING. It is located in an awesome out of the way but accessible spot perfect for a trip around the Big Island. Bill was incredibly responsive and we appreciated the ease of check-in and the amenities of this location.
This is a great place near Waipio Valley. There is a small village with nice restaurants nearby. The house is wonderful and has everything you can ask for! Even laundry detergent :-) Go and enjoy the beauty of the island in this wonderful airbnb
