I had a fantastic time at West Izu House--snorkeling, swimming, watching videos on a monster 120-inch screen (supplemented by a sweet sound system), and checking out the local sights. Bryan Kirk is a gracious and accommodating host, and was willing to take me to various spots and pick me up when necessary. He knows plenty of great spots and restaurants--including one in the nearby town where huge crabs occupy an open pool right in the middle of the place!--and is a great conversationalist and cook as well. The views from his aerie above the ocean are incredible and the atmosphere is utterly relaxing, which is what I was after. The only reason I didn't give this place five stars--and I'd actually rate it at four and a half--is that it isn't right on a beach. I'm sure I'll be back!
With amazing views across Suruga Bay, Bryan is an excellent host who cooked great food each day I stayed. Located right next to Heda and accessible by train to Shuzenji or Ferry direct to Heda, this is a great location to get away from the heat and stress of Tokyo, or any city!
Wander around the town of Heda, relax on the beach, surf the web via wifi, scuba dive or snorkel on guarded swimming areas or watch movies on his 120" home cinema system. Perfect.
We spent two days at Brian’s just after the New Year’s 2013. The first thing that took out breaths away was the amazing view from the front of the house. It’s hard to describe the colours that change as the day progresses with a final sunset of red just in front of you. Then to see mount Fuji right behind the house, just snuck up there quietly like “hey I’m here too”. Because it’s winter time Brian was a bit worried that there wouldn’t be as many attractions for us as over the summer, but the view, ocean air and a walk down the road and around the beach made it do. Not to mention all the fun we had racing cars on the Xbox in the house with the steering wheel and the huge screen, wow! We also saw a film and it was a proper (home) CINEMA experience. But the best of all was Brian’s hospitality, his amazing cooking, wonderful creativity, love for his place and for Japan.
Bryan was a great host at his West Izu house in Heda, Japan. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed a three day stay at this Bed & Breakfast in late May 2012.
Very relaxed atmosphere in the beautiful Japan countryside, Bryan was well prepared for guests and everything was ready and taken care of. He is also a fine cook.
Take a mini adventure to the Izu peninsula and stay at Bryan's B&B for a most peaceful getaway from the BIG cities up north..but not too far away.
You will not regret it
Bryan operating a B-N-B is the perfect storm! Through the years that I've known Bryan he has always been the ultimate host and makes fantastic food. Now that he's practically hand-built one of the coolest cabins on the Izu peninsula I can't think of a more relaxing way to spend a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Whether it is a killer view of Mt. Fuji or a peaceful walk around the hills, you will love this place...Personally, I really enjoyed bringing my mountain bike along to cruise along the rolling hills...
If you have ever seen the Japanese animation movie "Ponyo by the Sea" by Miazaki, then you can get a feeling for the atmosphere and visuals surrounding this home. The view and location is spectacular of both the sea, and mountain (Mt.Fuji) view. Izu is truly one of the great seaside locations in Japan.
Bryan and his wife Katsura are lovely hosts, fun and friendly to be around. You can see a lot of Byran's personality in the design of the home - we have seen the home progress from concept through to plans to finished building over the last few years.
My wife and I plus 3 year old daughter spent several days with Byran at this home in the summer of 2009. It had such a warm and comfortable feeling that made this one of our most enjoyable holidays ever. Breakfast on the balcony overlooking the sea was tremendous.
My daughter misses 'Uncle' Bryan.
Bryan's got a passion for whatever he does, whether it's cooking, gardening or as is the case here: his house! Most people dream about a life, he's living his dreams! To gaze out to the quiet vast emptiness that is the Pacific from his deck with a cold beer in your hand is pretty much as close to heaven on earth as you can get! Add to that Bryan's an all-around fun guy to hang around with and the consummate host... what the helll are you waiting for??
