Flavia Ghisalberti, born 1963, is a multi-disciplinary artist, director and choreographer of Italian and Swiss descent. She speaks German, English, Italian, French and some Russian. She studied at the art school in Basel from (phone number hidden) and holds a degree as a teacher of art. She had periodic exhibitions in Basel and created poetry sound performances with self made instruments from (phone number hidden). Since 1998 she has worked intensively with Butoh dance. Flavia’s art explores the limits of the body and the mind and what they are willing to endure. Although Flavia’s butoh style is primarily independent of a particular butoh school or master. Masaki Iwana is an important teacher for her. She co-founded the Butoh group “In Between” in 2003 and founded the international project “Limits” in 2008. She initiated and directed the binational festival “Butoh-Off” Basel/ Freiburg together with Lucie Betz in 2010. The Butoh-Off Festival became meanwhile a trinational project where Strasbourg is part of. The first trinational Butoh-Off took place in 2012 and is a bianual project. She has performed and taught in many cities in Europe, as well as in the United States and Russia. She has been invited to different Performance festivals in Europe, Russia and the United States.
