Having seen the previous negative reviews we were a bit anxious about our stay.
We arrived in the middle of the day and Matt was there to let us in and show us around the apartment. The apartment is very nice and really big. Matt was friendly and helpful giving us advice on things to do and places to go.
The only real problem was the bed in the second room - the bunk beds. The mattress was only about 1 inch thick and I could feel every slat under it. Some effort had been made to make it slightly better by placing a sleeping bag between the mattress and the bed frame...this was of little use. I managed about 5 hours sleep on the bed, but after that I had to decamp into the other room and share the bed in there.
Overall I would recommend this apartment, but only for two people who want to share a bed. Once you need to use the second bedroom things go downhill
We arrived a little bit nervous because of the previous reviews: they couldn't have been more wrong! Matt was a great host: he answered the phone at the first call, then he received us in to his apartment when we arrived and gave us advices of places, do's and dont's.
The place buy itself is amazing: clean, big and its location is amazing.
The beds are comfortable, the apartment is clean, perhaps the only flaw is that it has only one bathroom, but everything is a matter of organizing.
Matt is a great person, he makes you feel like home definitely I would return to his
I really recommend to stay there.
The best thing about Matt's place is the location and value for money. If you are looking for a base that is very easy to get to and from, then you have found it. We spent all or most of every day out and about, coming back to the apartment to freshen up, drop off shopping etc then back out again. The apartment was clean and tidy and the host friendly and knowledgable, regularly giving us advice about how to best get around and navigate his city. Be prepared for noise from roads and air conditioning in the front bedroom and an uncomfortable bed in the second room, also be prepared to be sharing the apartment and single bathroom/toilet with other people as it is his home. Thanks Matt you helped make our NYC visit great.
A bit hit&miss unfortunately. When paying over 200 per night for a place just expected some basics to be covered. The good points, We arrived to have our host Matt not there but he communicated this and his friend let us in and answered all our questions which was fine, the location was fantastic and a good base to explore NYC.
However, the main bedroom seemed as though the sheets were touched/used before we arrived and had nothing over the window so we had to out a towel over it, the 2nd bedroom was not made up with any sheets and was done after arrival but it was just a paper thin horrible mattress that you could feel the slats digging into your back from, their advice was put a single paper thin mattress underneath a double and it will be fine(it wasn't). The kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms and generally the house was fairly dirty with no effort for ongoing cleanliness and even a sink full of dishes to be loaded in the dishwasher(my parents cleaned up for them because they couldn't stand it) and a rubbish bin that was full and stank the house.the floors were dusty and looked like they hadn't been vacuumed either.
We had a strange time with the hosts, when one came back from being away he barely acknowledged we were there, we had a woman just walk in the door and go to a bedroom with barely a hello or explanation of who she was, just strange when we are guests and in a strange city. I don't need long chats, just to be a bit friendly and let us know who you are?
If you struggle with stairs then the 3 flights with no elevator as advertised will burn your legs after a full day of sightseeing.
I think if these little things were fixed it would have made a ok stay, a great one.
This was a disaster! The mobile number we were given did not belong to Matt - first red flag. The apartment was not clean - mold around bathtub; soap scum around sink; toilet paper roll dispenser broken off the wall; dirty dishes in the sink.
No closet, mirror or even a clothes hook in the bedroom. The less than clean comforter had been spread across the bed with the efficiency of a 7 year old. We tried to stick it our but ended up dragging our bags down four flights of stairs and two blocks to a nearby hotel. Airbnb was very good to work with and gave us a full refund. We won't let this scare us away from Airbnb in the future but we hope this review will scare you away from this apartment. Sad - because with $100 - $200 invested, it could have been a OK place to stay.

The location of the apartment was great, it was clean and big. But we were a bit surprised when we found out that a friend of Matthew also were staying there. Another surprise where that there were no elevator, so three stairs up with three big luggage were a bit heavy. And the noise, there were constant noise from outside, some kind of a/c machines sounding all the time during the night. I can't imagine how loud this could sound if the window had been open! Otherwise the apartment was great!
