We affectionately came to call this place "the crab shack", due to the thousands of crabs that spend their days on the beach and then migrate up the hill (and often into the lodge) at night.
The lodge all about communion with nature, getting back to basics and away from the hustle and bustle... just what we were looking for. Between the crabs, the sounds of the jungle and the (very) loud sound of the pounding surf, you feel like you're a million miles from civilization.
* Away from the tourist madness
* VERY secluded, even has its own effectively private beach.
* Basic, but with all the essentials
* Arrival, check-in and logistics were all managed very smoothly.
* Close enough to visit Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio
Cons (for some!):
* Super hot at night due to proximity to beach, with only fans to keep cool.
* The sound of the surf was very loud at night, takes some getting used to.
* Bugs & crabs will be sharing the shack weather you like it or not.
* Rock hard mattress
Tip: Good food to be had at the nearby Ranchos Remo, 4x4 required.
We had a wonderful stay - the lodge was so close to nature and felt secluded and private even though it was located conveniently right off the highway. There's huge open-air windows overlooking a beautiful view of the ocean, and a few seats and hammock off the side porch for kicking back and watching the stars at night. We walked down to the private cove, which was very peaceful and serene.
The lodge has a good kitchen with all the pots and cooking supplies you'd need for a quick dinner, and everything was comfortable and well-cared for.
Richard recommended a restaurant nearby and grocery store, which was very helpful during our stay! We had a great time and would definitely return!
It was a great experience.
First of all the hosts were fantastic : communicated with me in a timely manner and responded to all my questions, worked with me to insure connections from San Jose.
The place itself is great, clean, well maintained with thoughtful additions: coffee, flowers, fresh fruit etc.more than I expected.
It is an outstanding setting, amid bush and bamboo, with a lovely front veranda and frankly one of the best hot showers anywhere.
It's private and makes a wonderful inspirational retreat and only a short bus ride to Uvita and Dominical for shopping, banks etc.
There is a private beach several hundred meters away.
Internet connection and an array of spectacular wildlife....! Not to be missed!
What a gem!
Our stay of 4 nights was very relaxing, inspiring and adventurous. Beeing at a place without electricity was especially for our boys a new experience. We felt very much at home, also because the house is very well equiped and the host Paola is a very nice and caring person.
The beautiful beach (only a few steps down) was during our stay our 'privat beach', there is no direct access for other people.
We would love to come back one day and see how the growing garden will look like in a few years! We are sure, it will be even more beautiful.
If what you're looking for is a secluded, quiet retreat from the noise and chaos of city life then this is the place for you. The Chalet is nestled into the side of a mountain overlooking downtown Santa Ana, which glistens below in pinpricks of white and gold light after the sun goes down. During the day you can walk the forest trails around the property, or sit on the bench at the entry inhaling the perfume of tropical flowers and the musky scents of the jungle floor. If you are the kind of person who enjoys rustic rather than resplendent, who seeks a little bit of physical challenge (120 stone steps going and coming), and who's tastes tend toward the cabin rather than the castle, then you've found your hideaway!
I stayed at the Chalet for 5 weeks while recovering from a major facial surgery. My mom came for 2 of those weeks, and another friend came for 1. We loved it! It was spacious, quaint, and certainly adequate to all of our essential needs. When minor problems arose (trouble with the internet connectivity or questions about where the extra blankets might be found) the property manager was only a phone call away and always responsive. She always did everything in her power to assure that we had everything we needed.
The grounds keeper stopped by regularly with a smile and a warm greeting, and made sure all the moving parts of the property were kept in good running order.
Also, the neighbors proved to be not only friendly but lasting friends.
I would happily return and wish White Cloud Sanctuary all the best!
