I am a professional video maker and have lived in NY for the last 20 years. I am responsible and professional.
A key was left for me by the door. The host was not around to greet me. It was a 80+ hot muggy day and the place was like a sauna. I couldn't stay in the house for more than a few minutes. When I went downstairs into the room I saw that it was a small bunk bed with the light switch for the main light in the corner of the bunk bed. When I looked down there was a cockroach over an inch long dead on the middle of the floor. The room smelled musty and moldy. I went upstairs to the bathroom and the toilet had not been flushed since its last use. #2. By this point I was already sweaty and used the towel from the room to wipe my face off after I splashed some water on it. After a few minutes here I knew that I was not going to be comfortable for my stay and would happily pay a few extra dollars to stay in a bug free, cool, mold free hotel room. I informed the host that it was not a good fit and he texted me that he was happy to refund the charges minus the airbnb fee. I still have this text along with the pictures of the cockroach. A few days after my trip I received notice from airbnb that he was requesting near 100 dollars for my use of his towel. All in all I was not impressed by the house and am very disappointed in the host.
Even before I arrived, I heard from Ronaldo to coordinate arrival time and to provide me with directions to his home. He texted me a picture of the apartment and the location of his cottage, so I had no difficulty finding it.
He greeted me when I arrived, helped me with my luggage, showed me to my room and had a map of the neighborhood with restaurants, bars, grocery stores and the laundromat clearly marked and patiently answered all my questions.
We encountered each other a few times during my stay, but I hardly knew he was there. He is charming and considerate, and clearly tried hard to make my stay as comfortable as possible. He succeeded.
This space is not what you would think of when you think of New York. It is warm and welcoming, because of Ronaldo's effort to make it so. It is his work space and home, and staying with him was a glimpse into how the creative folks who work behind the cameras in television, advertising and theater, for example, live in and make New York what it is.
Ronaldo is an accomplished host. I truly appreciate the flexibility he provided for when to arrive, as I was staying with him after a wedding. He was so kind to offer towels, coffee in the morning as well as advice for taking the metro. In addition, he has a truly great place to offer, off the road so inevitably quiet and effortlessly comfortable. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again!
We stayed at six for 5 nights in the cottage in september 2013.
The apartment is well located, well equipped and very quiet.
We easily exchanged with Ronaldo by email before we left.
We enjoyed our stay.
Ronaldo was very nice, the house was very nice as well. Slightly dark downstairs, so remember to set an alarm.
Ronaldo was pretty much the ideal house guest. He was pleasant and easygoing, interesting to talk to, and also got out and enjoyed Salvador and Carnaval about as much as anyone reasonably could during his time here. We had a lot of mutual interests and even know some of the same people in the NYC/Brasil scene. He was lucky enough to get a room to himself but if he had had to share a room I'm sure he would have been fine with that. Next time we are in New York, which I hope is soon, I look forward to seeing him again!
