We made the reservation for the same reason that most would, it promised to be away from the noise of the town but close enough not to be a problem. Having read all the positive feedback, I would agree than Ben does his utmost to make you welcome. Unfortunately for us, and completely out of Ben's control, the local authority had fitted a new public address speaker right outside the property that started blasting out what sounded like local news reports mixed with Vietnamese folk songs. At 5am in the morning this was not conducive to sleep! To be fair, Ben's friend warned us when we arrived that this was going to happen but we though ear plugs would suffice. Sadly, one would have to be stone deaf to avoid the hour long cacophony of noise. Ben was away on business so we packed up and left. He met us at our new Hotel and was very apologetic, never having heard the speakers before as they had just been fitted. He gave us a full refund and took us to a local restaurant for lunch. He assured us that he would deal with the speakers within the next few days as his Homestay was untenable as it was. I have no doubts that he will sort it out.
We had a really good time at Ben's place for about 2 weeks. We're a family of 4, with two small children who were happy to sleep on couch cushions on the bedroom floor. For us it was great to have a separate bedroom to the living area, something you don't get in a hotel. Ben's place has everything you see in the photos. We enjoyed the porch, to hang out and watch children from the school opposite pass by. If you're looking to experience some real Vietnamese living, then come here. If you're able
to adapt, and don't mind doing your own dishes camping style, this place
can be just the ticket.
You can cycle or take Ben's motorbike to the nearby market, food stalls and (roadside) restaurants. Or you can cook a simple meal in your own kitchenette.
The house is away from the town centre, but for a few dong you can get there by motorbike or taxi. Ben or one of his friends are all to happy to make the necessary arrangements for you. Apart from touristy things in town and a number of authentic food experiences with our fabulous host, we recommend trips to the beach (20 mins by taxi, for a small price you can enjoy the facilities of luxury Ana Mandara Hotel) and on cooler days to My An hot springs (15 min ride, bear in mind entrance fees).
Sometimes there's some sawing going on next door, and some mornings we were woken up by a newly installed loud speaker installed in the street to bring the news and morning exercises. For us it was all part of the deal. We recommend roaming around in the neighbourhood, especially if you have children. It's so easy to make that first contact with other kids if you carry a toy or ball around.
The host, Ben, will go out of his way to help with whatever you may need. He's also an interesting young man to talk with. We met a friend of his who looks after the place if Ben's not there, and she's also considerate and fun.
Ben was an excellent host and did everything possible to make my stay a nice one. He is a caring and considerate person who truly wants to do big things with his life.
There were some things out of Ben's control, like the weather. It rained the entire 6 days I was there. As the house is a bit removed from town, unless you rent a motorbike, you are a good walking or biking distance from the city. However, that can certainly be nice too.
My favorite part of the stay was my last day. I had developed a cold while there and Ben's mother made me the most wonderful spicy soup with some rice paper and herb snack. UNBELIEVABLE! It was so nice and so unexpected to be given such a wonderful treat when feeling so tired, cold, and sick! Ben was kind enough to set it all up so I could eat before leaving later that day.
I did want to stay somewhere quiet, so it should be noted that there is a school across the street and a welder next door. Having said that, Vietnam can be a loud place and this was much more peaceful than the city center for sure. And, at night, there was a wonderful silence which you definitely would not experience closer to the city.
Staying with Ben was super comforting at the time: he rescued my out of a situation of despair and helped me with his kindness out of every possible problem I faced. He is a gentle young man with many brave ideas and we spent some time together philosophizing about life. It felt as if we met for a reason and I am very glad about my encounter with Ben. By the way, his apartment s nice, too :)
Ben's house was a wonderful and delicious sweet after my difficult journey by train to Huê.
I was tired and empty when i arrived there, but meeting Ben and his true kindness suddenly gave me the will to wake up as early as possible and start to discover his city.
He was closer to a friend than a simple kind guide, and took me in so many different places, where i had both excellent and surprising food, where i met other kind people, where i had great fun..
We also talk for a long time about many things in life, which was very much enjoyable !
I met more than a guide in my journey here, and all i can say to anyone is to try and see!
We are experienced travelers but this stay exceeded all our expectations. The house is clean and has all comforts you need for a small price. All electrical devices operated accurate and the bed was comfortable.
The host (Ben) made many efforts to improve our stay in Hue City. He is a local and know a lot of small secret places for eating really traditional food. In this way it was possible for us to learn much more about the vietnamese tradition and lifestyle. In addition he gave us some bicycles so that we had an easy job to travel through the city. We can recommend this place for every kind of tourist and every claim! Thank you Ben for our nice 3days stay! We are enthusiastic, as you can see
Ben was very helpful, I was comfortable stay at Ben place. but for me just a bit a far way from the National University of Singapore.
The best thing about the stay is the convenient location, near to many good food outlets and the MRT train station within walking distance. The free wifi was much appreciated too. The room we had was a bit small but adequate for 2 persons using drawer beds instead of a double bed or twin beds. Ben is also a wonderful host who's very friendly and helpful.
Response from Ben:
Ben was an extremely professional host, everything during the process went smooth. The room is in walking-distance to the MRT, as well as the bus system, also very conveniently close to the Airport. The roommates are respectful and gave us great insights and were very helpful. Definitely recommended!
It'a a late comment, but anyway I need to leave it here, cause I would like to highly recommend this friendly guy to anyone who want to have a good and comfortable experience in Singapore!
Especially thank you for being very polite and patient with my girlfriend while she was trying to overcome language barrier!
The real travel is not about changing place, but about changing mind and communicate with different (website hidden) I hope I will see u in the near future again :)
We were once stay on a propriety that ben manage in Singapore back in 2012 for about 4 months prior moving into our new home and must say that we're very please. Ben is very friendly, cheerful and helpful. He welcome our stay with Vietnamese dinner. Whenever there is problem such as air-con leaking was dealt very promptly. Thank you so much ben for making our short stay easy & comfortable :)
Working with Ben has always been very pleasing, he is friendly, helpful, cooperative and also has a great sense of humor.
