I will write this revue as if I one of my daughters wanted to stay in the apartment. The location is perfect to nearly everything in Midtown Manhattan. Walking distance to a market and felt very safe. The doormen were very friendly and helpful. The layout is very nice, very open and inviting.
The smoke alarm was beeping due to low battery. I tried to reach James to determine if the alarm was connected to a central system. No response, so I took the battery out. No big deal.
The only issue with the apartment was cleanliness, especially the bathroom and kitchen. I had to clean the apartment without benefit of proper cleaning materials, not even paper towels. Boxes were stacked in the kitchen floor, along with trash. I washed the coffee maker, but did not trust the cup. The bathroom was beyond unacceptable, a bottle of bathroom beach type cleaner was made available, but no rags or sponges. And I will add, being from the South and considering myself a guest in his home, I brought James a basket of hotel shampoos, conditioners, lotions and soaps.
The pillows and linens were questionable at best. They did not appear to be anywhere near fresh or recently washed.
I did not want to violate the privacy of someone's home, thus I only cleaned the surface enough to allow me to sleep.
I took before and after photos, the after photos are for his use.
Would I recommend the apartment, would I stay there again? I am a tad torn on a response. Once I cleaned the apartment to the best of my ability, it was great. This is not an apartment you should plan on cooking in the kitchen. If location is your objective, the apartment is perfect. If the thought of staying in a college boy's apartment gives you nightmares, this is the not the place for you.
Location location Great! Very nice apartment and building for the budget , James was very helpful :)
Would definitely consider it if I go again.
Excellent communication, perfectly located apartment. James is a very nice and accommodating host.
Super emplacement , en plein cœur de New York , appart coquet. James a été très arrangeant . Très sympathique! Je recommande vivement ! Thanks James
The studio is located very central in Manhatten. You can reach shopping venues by foot, subway connections are about 2 blocks away. I don't think the location could be any better.
The studio has a good size for 2 people. The bed was clean and comfortable, and we felt relaxed after a night of sleep. The area seems pretty secure, even at night. So no shady things going on ;) Also, there is a doorman which makes it easy to get the keys and keeps an eye on who is going in and out.
Unfortunately, the bathroom was not as clean as one could hope for. It was ok, but I think a new shower curtain and a bit of effort could make this place an even better stay. Same thing with the kitchen. Also, the road beneath the appartment is quite noisy and the windows won't help much with that. So if you have troubles with sleeping, take some ear plugs along. Keep in mind though, that this is NY and you probably are not gonna find something as comfortable in this price range.
So, to wrap it up: Nice place to stay if you're looking for a centrally located appartment in the middle of manhatten and you're on a budget.
The listing is just as described. Very convenient location. Very polite doorman. James is very helpful and considerate. Many thanks to James for for a great stay!
First of all James is a great host, very friendly and easy going. The studio is very nice, in a super safe area, close to everything (MoMA, Gran Central, Empire state bulding.....) I had a great time and I would definitely raccomand it to anyone!
We had a great stay at James's apartment! The location was wonderful. His place is in the perfect location to explore NYC, only steps away from Times Square. The apartment was clean and comfortable, and James was great to deal with. Thx James :)
First off, the host is very nice, very concerned that everything goes well. The location is really good. The apartment is in Midtown East - very close to Rockefeller center, Times Square, Grand Central station, Madison/Park/5th avenue shopping, Central Park, Broadway. Outside the apartment is fantastic eateries, so you don't have to go far, and late night deliveries. There is a door man, who makes guests register - so you feel safe that they are aware of people who come in and out of the building. He makes it a point to know the people who come in and out of the building. Very safe location. Lots of people walking around, foot traffic, I felt safe as a single girl walking around even late at night. The price is fantastic, very good considering the area. Considering where you are - you would pay a lot more for hotel or other forms of accommodations - remember 'location, location, location'. Apartment is very comfortable - there is a bed, couch, kitchen, bathroom. Host had a lot of books around, so you can be entertained if you like that kind of thing. Bad sides were: the place was not very clean - dusty, sheets were old and dingy, shower curtain was moldy, towels smelled bad. Host was nice enough to leave laundry supplies - so I washed the linens and towels, so I was ok with that. I had to do some cleaning to feel comfortable. There is no microwave, so hard to heat up leftovers, but most of the time I ate out anyway, so was not an issue. There was no TV. I had my laptop so I could watch Netflix, and I was there to explore NYC anyway, not watch TV. Overall, I thought it was a great place. There was an air conditioner, so the temperature was always comfortable. I would recommend this to others if you are on a budget, and are easy going so that minor inconveniences don't bother you. The only minor inconvenience I had was I had to do some light cleaning to feel comfortable, perhaps the host would have this rectified before the next person visits. The host was easy to get a hold of, could easily be contacted within 24-36 hours via email. Responds to calls/texts.
James is a very kind NYorker who rents his studio only at times he is travelling. We were fortunate to spend 5 days there (we met him at his departure). This studio is perfectly located in Midtown Manhattan, within a fine neighbourhood, and close to public transportation and major attractions in the island. For instance, in his street, towards one side is UN headquarters and to the other Times Square. We surely recommend his place to anyone wanting a most convenient location in Manhattan. And as we stayed there two weeks after hurricane Sandy, the local infrastructure was not damaged in contrast to the tip of the island.
