Tess is very knowledgable about the city, the town she lives in (St. Thomas), Peruvian life, and SO many other things! She can guide you to safe tours or treks if you are up for that or too the local beach or pool if you want to relax.
I really can't recommend staying with Tess enough! Her home is so lovely, with a big, open kitchen space, hammocks to relax in, and the most wonderful pets! I fell in love with her dog and cat. The room itself is a beautiful wooden space with comfy bed and lots of windows. Bathroom is shared, but there were only three of us in the house, so it was absolutely fine. The community of Santo Thomas was such a breath of fresh air after being in Iquitos, but Iquitos is not far if you want to go to a restaurant or use the Internet. Maybe 35-45 minutes by moto taxi, normal price is 7 soles. I loved the food in Santo Thomas, though- just local fresh fish being grilled at a picnic table on the side of the road, but more delicious than any restaurant I ate at! And cheap! Also yummy treats like chicken rice in banana leaves and plantain balls. Loved it! The people in the community were very kind to me, and Tess herself has wonderful stories and an amazing life that she is happy to share about! She is a generous host and offers fruit and tea and all kinds of lovely things in her house. Can't wait to come back and visit again- this is a special place!
Tess is a gracious host and made us feel very welcome. She helped us get around Iquitos, as well as arranged a jungle hike with her local family (not a cheesy, overpriced tour); and it was quite an experience, but not a bad to have. The house is welcoming and interesting, a jungle house blending in the locals for sure. The house is a little far from the city center, but a straight shot by bus. Tess' neighborhood is also welcoming; we walked down the road and had dinner with a local family at their front porch restaurant twice and breakfast once because we loved it.
We enjoyed our stay and thank Tess for her kindness and help. Ericka & Manny
Staying with Tess was a great experiencie. She has a soft way of moving around, helping you with anything you need. She knows a lot about the area and about medicine and she will happyly orient you on any subject that you,re probably interested. We felt very welcomed by her and felt comfortable in her place. The house is a Maloca style construction, made by local friends with all the basics that you need in a place like this. You feel conected to nature right away. From the yard you can watch the orange sunsets on the Nanay river. 40 minutes from town for us was perfect.
Great place, beautifull person!!
Strongly recomend it!!
I can't give enough praise to Tess! She is the best and most lovely host! Her home gives a authentic feel wich includes buckets of water in the shower to replace running water at times :-)The garden is a wonderful oasis.Tess is very generous and gladly shares her knowledge of both the area and medicinal plants and happily connects you with the locals to take you on a tour of the surroundings.I stayed with Tess a couple of nights before going into the jungle on an Ayahuasca retreat and she was the obvious choise coming back to Iquitos. I did a dieta with her for a week wich was an unforgettable experience. She made sure I was very well looked after and taken care of.
I returned home with lots of new energi and good tips on how to keep it that way.
Tess, don´t be surpriced if I come back! 3
We had a wonderful time staying with Tess. She is an excellent host, knowing a lot about her area and plant medicines - which we found not only interesting but also very useful after my friend caught some sort of flu. She had lots of people to stay during the time we were there, making it a bit like a very homely hostel, which was lovely. There was always someone around to talk to. Tess lives in a great area, a ten minute walk from the centre of Iquitos (quicker by motor taxi, which became our new favourite mode of travel). If you stay with Tess you'll get a much more authentic (much nicer, I think) experience of life in Iquitos than if you go to a hostel or hotel in the centre of the city . The house, though simple, had everything we would ever need and was beautifully decorated. It was impeccably clean and there were never any bugs. We cannot recommend staying with Tess enough.
Tess is a great host, very kind, hospitable and truly fascinating. The accommodations are very spartan and may leave you desiring more, but the room is well represented in the ad, so there were no surprises in my case.
The area really gives you a feel for what daily life is like in Iquitos and I would have very much liked to stay in the area for a few more nights. Very easy to get to the town center via mototaxi and be sure to have some fish from the lady next door in the evenings!
