We have properties on all the islands!
What a cool spot! Really unique and peaceful. It can be a little difficult to find because the dirt road sneaks up on you and kind of looks more like a driveway or service road. The location is great--only a few minutes away from Volcano NP entrance and village. Grab groceries and beers in town. You'll want to stay in the hot tub the whole time and not leave. We had a great stay and wish we could have stayed longer. Bonus: our neighbors were really cool. This would be a great space to rent both cottages for a larger family or group of friends that want to share space and have some privacy at the same time (deck and hot tub are common area). Clean, quiet, and very retro. LOVED IT!
We absolutely loved the Palia cabin. It was perfect for us traveling with three kids and we all loved the hot tub. Just minutes from the National Park on a very quiet little street with views of the forest, Mauna Loa and the gold course.
Gary was very responsive and communicated with us easily. Found the place easily with his directions.
Only suggestion is to maybe have a few more things to cook with as Volcano store is crazy expensive to buy stuff to cook with. (spices, oil, stuff like that)

My husband and I stayed at hale Palila for two nights. Overall, we have enjoyed our stay at Palila - it was a cute house with one wall entirely out of glass, which allowed for some spectacular views. The location was quiet and rural, we would wake up to the bird signing each morning. It was also right by the volcano park, which was very convenient. The house was well-equipped for cooking. We have not used the hot tub. However, it was absolutely freezing inside. Like wearing all our outdoor layers freezing. We had to dart out of the bed in the morning to get to the shower as soon as possible. Towels wouldn't dry and it was really uncomfortable. There were two space heaters provided, which didn't do much since the entire house is a huge open space. I suppose it would be possible to make the house warm with the fire, however we found only two (moderately moist) logs near the fireplace, which wouldn't even catch on fire. We drove around looking for the wood but of course right before the NYE everyone was sold out. We have reached out to the owners but the message was left unanswered, which is my first experience like that with Airbnb. Bottom line is, the house has a lot of potential and we would recommend this accommodation during the warmer months of the year (unless the temperature is relatively standard all year round, not sure about that), but we would also strongly recommend for the owners to provide sufficient supplies to make it warm and comfortable for the guests.
We spent 2 days at Nene and loved it! It was very close to Volcano National Park. The cabin was clean and spacious. We got to use the hot tub in the evenings, which made for a great end to a hectic day.
This is a very sweet place to stay. The cabin is adorable and well designed. It's very quiet with only one cabin next to it. There is a clean hot tub, as well as wifi, a well-stocked kitchen with all the utensils and plates needed, a microwave etc. And a huge bonus... a washer and dryer and some laundry detergent. The place is clean and comfortable. It's a stone's throw from Volcano National Park. The two things that do need improvement is the futon couch should be replaced and is not really suitable for someone to sleep on, although the maintenance guy happened to be here, and he gave us a cot, which was great, from the other A-frame for our daughter to sleep on. Also we came in December and we had some rain and cold weather. The two space heaters were not warm enough to heat the entire place, although the electric blanket was great for sleeping.
This was a nice little cabin hidden away in the Volcano area, very private. It is located in a private road and no lights on the road, we came when there was still daylight so we were able to locate it easily. We had a very relaxing time here after exploring the volcano. The location was great, right by the park so we can come back to relax before heading back out at night for the night view of the park.
We had 5 people and we were still comfortable. The place was equipped with everything (including a hair dryer). It was a bit chilly for the first night but after lighting the fire and heaters, it was nice and cozy. The shower was good, with sufficient hot water and water pressure.
The only improvement would be to replace the 2 sofa beds. The springs are loose and you sink into the middle. Also, if you can consider moving the TV to the living room area where the fireplace is would be better.
Other than that, we loved our stay here on this side of the Big Island. We would definitely recommend others to stay here next time.
The Volcano cabins are great! We like to stay in unique small places and this was perfect. Cabins larger than we'd thought so plently of room for the 4 of us. 1 double bed on a mezzanine upstairs, with 2 further sofa beds downstairs. Beautiful location and very close to the Volcano National Park so perfect for those visiting and/or hiking. A little tricky to find in the rain and dark, but directions very helpful and host very cooperative. Hot tub also an added bonus!
Hale Nene was so cozy and in a great location. There was a slight scheduling issue with the cleaning before we came but we called Gary and it was fixed right away. We loved all the windows! It rained on our last day there and it was so comfortable in the cabin with the rain falling on the roof, I wanted to sleep in all day!
Everything in the location was perfectly set up upon arrival. From the unlock code to the extras (laundry detergent and fabric softeners), this place was set up for immediate comfort and use.
Nice large windows throughout made it great to see out during the day and a great "light show" (lightning storm) at night. Spacious enough for a family and private enough for just the two of us.
No curtains but plenty of private area including bathroom and front room. Would stay there again.
Die Unterkunft war einmalig ! Mitten im Nirgendwo und so romantisch. Die Unterkunft hat alles was man benötigt, inkl. Whirlpool. Nur zu empfehlen !
