The apartment was just as projected. It had easy access to the subway system (less than 5 minute walk) which was important to us during our stay. Barbara met us when we got there and was most helpful. We enjoyed our stay and the apartment provided a good home base while visiting the area.
Astoria is a perfect starting point for a visit to NYC. The apartment is nicely situated in a Greek/Italian area and only 2 blocks from the last station on the subway (great for the morning start when you can get a seat) and yet is only 20 minutes from Times Square. We were very comfortable walking around the area. A couple of the restaurants we tried were fabulous (Tufino's and MP Taverna).
The apartment was very clean and was great for the two of us. Our brother and sister-in-law joined us for two days and that was a bit cramped but doable. Four adults using the one small bathroom just required cooperation.
Our host was great and was quick to follow up on any requests (we asked for an extra blanket one day).
We loved the stay and hope to get back soon.
This is a 5th floor walk-up--no elevator and narrow, steep stairs. We learned this only after booking. The couch folds out with difficulty and the resulting bed has a thin mattress over a metal frame. It was so inconvenient that we left it as a bed taking up most of the living room. You can feel the metal supports through the mattress--very uncomfortable. We were later given a mattress pad which made it better but far from good. The apartment has a TV but no cable or local reception--only a Roku box. When we arrived some of the windows-including the bedroom- were lacking shades or drapes. We had to hang a sheet over the window for the duration of our visit.
The apartment layout is good for two people, marginal for three and questionable for four. There were three of us. We never met Barbara but she did respond to emails and dealt promptly with several minor issues. The location is very good, in a neighborhood with many eateries, groceries and services like wash and fold. The N and Q train lines are a short walk away.
Barbara was very responsive and overall we were very happy with the location and the accommodation. We love Astoria. So handy to NYC and it is such a friendly place with lots of handy shops and services.
It's a long way up - 5 storeys, if you have a lot of luggage, but the accommodation is quite adequate.
Barbara has lots of useful information handy. On the downside, the sofa bed is quite uncomfortable (although Barbara provided additional padding when requested), and it was not all that well supplie. For instance items such as soaps, tissues, toilet brush, blankets (enough for two but not more) were in short supply.
The pipes that warm the unit can also be quite noisy - but this is something they hosts can't do much about.
Despite these shortcomings we had a really great time in Astoria, and Barbara always responds quickly to any requests/feedback.
Barbara's place is exactly how it's shown in the pictures, it's absolutely lovely! It's quite spacious, the bathroom is very nice, clean, and freshly renewed, the kitchen in fully equipped, the sofa is super comfy, etc, etc. The neighborhood is excellent, with lots of restaurants and stores, and very close to the metro. I didn't have the chance to meet Barbara, but she answered my texts right away. Great place to stay, would recommend it!

We really enjoyed this space. There was plenty of room for our family of three, it was in the neighborhood we wanted (walking distance to our friend's place), the subway was close, and there were a lot of nearby restaurant options as well. There was even a street fair one day down the street. The great part though is that everything is close, but the street the house is on is nice and quiet.
Barbara lives next door, but made herself just as available as needed. She communicated mostly through text message which I liked. She tried to borrow a crib from the daycare downstairs for our daughter to use. It didn't work out, but I appreciated the effort.
It was very hot when we visited, but the air conditioning units in the apartment worked really well. The a/c in the apartment saved us on that trip!
The only negative for us is that it wasn't very baby proof, but I assume that doesn't make a difference for most people. In order to feed my daughter baby food, I had to sit her on the floor. The bar has backless stools so we couldn't use those and I didn't want her to get food on the living room furniture.
The literature and maps that Barbara had on the coffee table were very helpful and it even comes stocked with books and a nice tv if you have some downtime. It was also so helpful to have a full kitchen to use.
The apartment is beautifully decorated. We couldn't believe how nice it was when we entered. We also appreciated Barbara letting us check in early.
Thanks so much Barbara!
Barbara was a delight to have stay with us. She was quiet, considerate and easy to host. I can highly recommend her to other hosts.
I enjoyed having Barbara staying at my flat. A really interesting and nice person. I enjoyed our conversations a lot and got educated on organic wine. As a guest she was very respectful and tidy. I would have her staying anytime and I would recommend her to any airbnb hosts!
I have known Barbara for 5 years. She is very hardworking, clean, and responsible person. I would definetly recommend her business to everyone , because I know that what ever she does , it's done with integrity and precision.
Barbara is a good friend of mine and was once a co-worker with me! She is an extremely organized, caring, and smart person. She is very very clean, hospitable, as I know firsthand as I have worked with her, hung out, broken bread, and travelled with her. Can't say enough good things about her (also I have known her for 4+ years) Trust Barbara for a great place! You won't regret it!
Barbara is a great host, very professional and service oriented. She always makes herself available and makes sure that her guests are comfortable at her home. Her place is always inviting - it's a great apartment with a great host to spend your next NYC stay at.
professional and trustworthy, i would recommend staying here.
