Brooklyn, NY. Love travel
We spent 3 nights in Oct. 2010 at Hank's. He was a great host! He sat down with us when we got in late at night and spent time with us to go over directions to the subway, grocery store, etc. His house is very spacious, so it's a much better place for a group to stay than in a small apartment in Manhattan. The subway's only 5 minutes away and it's about a 20 minute ride to Penn Station, so not bad at all. Also, his house was very clean and the beds were really comfy. On the day we were leaving, he let us leave our luggage at his house so that we could go see a show in Manhattan, which helped us out a great deal.
The only down sides were that the immediate neighborhood doesn't have much in it to do, from what we could see, but we were busy all weekend with other plans, so it didn't really matter to us and everything is very close by. Also, Hank's kitchen isn't finished. There's a microwave, toaster oven, and kind of "hot plate"/stove thing. It was fine for our needs and the grocery store is very close, but if you want to really cook a lot or bake anything, there's no stove or oven right now.
In all, Hank was a great host and his house was extremely spacious (esp for NYC) and clean. We would recommend it to a group of people who didn't mind taking the train a little bit to Manhattan, wanted more space, and didn't necessarily want to only hang out near the house in Brooklyn.
Great Time in Brooklyn, New York. Hank has been very comprehensive (we showed up at least 1 hour late for check-in) available and extraordinarly helpful when we had small children issues.
The appartment is reasonably well situated (10 min walk from the Northstrand A-express subway station), and in a friendly neighborhood.
The apartment in itself, very spacious, although uncompletely finished is a piece of African art with lots of superb african statues and figures and a constant obsession for a "perfect" interior architecture. The main bathroom is worth the checking out eventhough finding the hot water is a bit tricky in the middle of all those knobs...
The downside? No downsides at all if you're single or couples without children, except you're not in the center of Manhattan.
What can be improved? The kitchen side that would need a dining table (unless you prefer eating on the floor or on a couch or only plan eating in restaurants) with chairs. Also, when you are with children, the esthetic side makes things much less functionnal, but with 3 young kids we managed it without breaking anything, except a bowl...and that was me....
The pictures do not do this place justice! Hank's pad is truly gorgeous and inspiring. We arrived on a soggy afternoon and when we checked in to Hank's pad, all we wanted to do was to coop ourselves up in this beautiful apartment and keep ourselves warm, leaving reluctantly only when it was time to grab dinner. The place is stunningly amazing, and oh, did I mention the rainforest shower and the deep bathtub? Yup, you heard that right. This place is better than a suite in Manhattan, and more. Lastly, Hank was incredibly helpful and an all-round nice guy. Make this pad your base in Brooklyn/Manhattan - you will definitely love it!
Had a great time at Hank's pad! There was 4 of us staying over 3 nights in September (2 couples from Canada, all in our late 20s) and there would have plenty of room for another couple if need be. Hank was very helpful with suggestions for our visit (it was our first time in NYC) and the pizza place he recommended, just down the street, was the BEST meal we had all weekend. The interior of the place is even nicer in person than the pics show, although he still has some work to do on the exterior of the house, but I thought the beautiful brownstones all up and down the street make up for it. We spend most of our time in Manhattan, but loved staying in Brooklyn - great atmosphere and feel to it. We were a 3 minute walk to the subway and made good use of the free parking just outside the building (we drove to NYC and left our car parked for the weekend). Would certainly recommend Hank's place to other travelers like ourselves, although there were a lot of open stairs and breakable items around, so maybe not the best bet for young children or those who have difficulty with stairs. All in all a great experience - thanks Hank!
I had the pleasure of staying at Hanks place last month for 4 nights and had a great time. I couldn't ask for a better host, Hank was easy to communicate with from beginning to end. I had a few travel delays checking in and checking out and Hank was understanding.
The place was what i expected plus more, my friends and i felt like we were at home. Its also conveniently located between 2 subway lines and a bus, so traveling back and forth was easy. My only compliant is that i don't own this beautiful place, looking forward to staying here again. Thanks again Hank.
Staying with Hank made our experience of New York infinitely more enjoyable. His house is everything it appears to be in the pictures and that coupled with Hanks helpful attitude around anything we needed makes this house a must stay if you come to the city.
Hank's place is everything he says it is and more. The shower was liking being at a spa and Hank was incredibly helpful. I'm a clean freak and when Hank said no shoes I was a little dubious about the idea of walking around the house barefoot, but Hank's home was as clean as it is beautiful. You cannot go wrong with staying at Hank's place; I know I will be back soon.
I got to NYC early and check in was not till 3pm, but Hank was so cool he let me drop off my bags and sat down with me, gave me a nice cold glass of juice and told me about the area. I then went to lunch at a restaurant 4 or 5 blocks away, really good Thai food!
When I returned I got settled in and awaited the rest of my team, the place is amazing! A total of 7 of us stayed and Hank was amazing to bring a really nice air mattress for the 7th person, even though there was enough beds for all of us he wanted us to be comfortable. There are 3 washrooms; one in the master bed, the hot water was endless as 7 of us took showers in the morning each day. The main washroom shower that falls from the ceiling was the highlight of this place. Everyone was in it for a good 20 min each!
Great patio off the living room where we spent a ton of time having drinks and eating in the sun with some music playing (Hank was again amazing and gave us some speakers to hook up our Ipod) The neighbors are great, everyone in Brooklyn was so nice every were I went people said hello, good morning ect... Not use to this as I live in Toronto downtown where no one even looks at you lol....
We were close to the train and able to travel to all our destinations very easy, Hank helped us with allot of this! The Fulton Mall is great cheep shopping VIM Sneaker store close by for amazing shoe deals.
The only somewhat of a downfall to the place which will be upgraded soon is the kitchen. There is a grill, microwave and stove top, but no kitchen sink; we just used the washroom that is pretty much in the kitchen so it was fine. If you plan to come down and cook a ton I suggest not, a bit of a pain to cook on small pans and wash dishes. But you’re in NYC anyway who eat in right! tons of great food places in the area to get cheep amazing food!
I will be back to NYC and always stay with Hank! He is a great host and has an amazing place! Can't wait to see the rest of the place when it is fully finished. (Hank is an amazing architect and is working on the other units in the building along with the back yard!
Crash at the architect pad is the best choice I have ever made for accommodations in NYC!
BIG THANKS TO HANK!
Hank and his friends were excellent guests. They are friendly and respectful people. They also left the apartment in perfect condition. We strongly recommend them to the AirBnB network.!
The space is actually comfortable for six people, it's sophisticated and very relaxing. Hank was pleasant and greeted me when I arrived. The bathroom is seriously ridiculous and that alone is reason enough to stay here. The pics are definitely not deceiving. I will be back
Great spot! Close to everything Brooklyn! Plus, the architect guy is a wealth of information about what's really going on in the neighborhood. I strongly recommend your stay. In fact, I'm sure I'll be back.
