Carla was a wonderful host! My daughter and i enjoyed staying with her. she was friendly, non-intrusive, gave us our own key, access to her kitchen. she doesn't speak English, but her French is ok. we spent a lot of time laughing over our communication woes! her friend, Alessandro, is a lovely man, also friendly, doesn't live there, but thank goodness he was there! He speaks a little bit of English. just enough for us to convey meaning. very helpful for figuring out our buses for the stay.
The place is small, but adequate. The bed is a pull down single. Again, adequate. The shower is a hand held hose over the tub. A bit tricky to manage, but ok.
Never having been to Italy, I was worried about being able to follow directions to her place. Upon leaving the airport, we had to find my way to the Termini Station. I asked directions. No problem. Upon arriving at the Termini Station in Rome, we headed over to the bus area directly in front. Bus H. It's labelled. Capasso. Hop on! It's a long ride, but don't give up. Once it reaches the end of the line, easy to know because it quite literally stops and everybody jumps off, Carla's place is just around the corner. Not having a cell phone, I made sure to have her phone number handy and asked somebody to make e phone call for me. Again, no problem. She was theremin minutes!
Bus H took us back into the city proper. We hopped off as soon as we s,as the Colosseum, marked the location in our heads, checked out the return stop (look for the "H" on the bus stop signs. On the way back, we were able to get off closer to Carla's actual street. She very carefully showed us landmarks to watch for.
Bus 98 was another easy bus stop to access St. Peter's (website hidden) in mind that the Roma Pass does NOT allow you into St. Peter's! We didn't know that and were on the way to the 2-hour lineup. Fortunately, there are a lot of local guides ready and willing to take you through. Suspicious, I nearly passed them by. The "Skip the Line" actually benefitted us!
There is a handy pharmacy just a few minutes from Carla's place. No matter where we turned, there was no shortage of them anywhere! My daughter and I have an iPhone App with an offline Italian translator. Handy, but far from ideal. Charades work well. :)
Overall, our Rome experience was wonderful and I definitely recommend staying at Carla's place if you're looking for something nice, not fancy. She embodies the friendliness of Roma! Grazie, Carla!
Carla was a wonderful host!! She made us dinner and breakfast, and her place was easily accessible by bus to anywhere in Rome. Highly recommend.
