Hakan is really nice host and we had a wonderful experience in this historical district. The house is amazing to explore and we really like the details. Hakan brought the HDMI cable for projector on third floor so we enjoyed watching movie! His recommendations are really helpful for touring Istanbul and he is always nice to talk in Turkish with our cab driver on phone to guide the way. It is easy to get a cab on the street near the river!
our biggest issue with our stay is that we didn't stay longer!
the house is beautiful and neat. the neighborhood is pretty empty, but we felt safe walking back late at night. there's adorable little cafes/restaurants around it and it wasn't far from the major sites (by taxi). the one drawback is that taxi drivers literally do not know street names in Istanbul, so you kind of hand to come with your Google maps ready and navigate them through the streets once they reached the general area of Balat. hakan was really great and talked the taxi driver through it when we first landed. he gave us lots of tips about the city, and was pretty patient with us (especially when one of us thought we had accidentally left our phone in the house after checkout-whoops, sorry Hakan!)
we would go back in a heartbeat. we wish we had spent more time in the house!
It was my 3rd stay at Hakan's place. The place is always clean and tidy. Very convenience location. Ana Hakan always reply quick while you message him.
Hakan is a really cool guy and super helpful. He had written up great notes about the history of the neighbourhood and other recommends in the city. The house is simply incredible and although there is so much to see and do in Istanbul we also just wanted to stay around the house too! We made good use of all the rooms, from the rooftop, and the cinema room to the hamam-style bathrooms.
The local neighbourhood is so amazing - a taste of real Istanbul. It's a bit of a walk to the bridges but a lovely walk - you can take the route along the water and stop for a freshly caught fish sandwich or through the back streets and sample real local life - both of which are amazing! During week days we felt like the only non-residents in the area (although there are more tourists at the weekend). The local cafes were my favourite in the whole city. The local area has the perfect balance of authenticity and gentrification (i.e. a handful of hip but very bohemian cafs and restaurants). The crumbling architecture set next to beautifully restored buildings makes for a fantastic contrast. Please do leave at least a day to explore the neighbourhood and sit around drinking Turkish coffee, playing draughts or sketching, or just watching the world go by around you. The street food is great too - my fave is the stuffed mussels!
Everything exceeded our expectations - you will love.
The main asset of this house is the decoration. The perfect balance between simple industrial style and modern equipment. The main issue is that you don't want to leave!
Great place thanks for letting us stay
I am sorry we where a bit slow leaving hope it didn't create any issues
Hakan was a good host. Communication flew smoothly. We had a problem with the the staircase lighting which was solved in less than 24 hours. We accidentally left the key inside the apartment and Hakan brought a locksman in less than 20 minutes.
The area where the apartment is located is far from completing the enjoyable phase from a process of gentrification. We felt it still remains too dull for those looking for a more vibrant neighbourhood. In terms of distance, the apartment is decently located from most famous touristic spots like Haga Sophia, Grand Bazar, however, this means at least a 25 min drive with no traffic. Catching a cab from/to the house is always easy, drivers know Balat area quite well.
In terms of the distribution of the building, comfort may be compromised for those who don't like or cant be moving up and down continuously: a beautiful 6 storey apartment that requires continuous movement in at least three different floors (kitchen, main bedroom and toilet).
Hakan's apartment is cosy with everything you need for a short break in Paris. Fantastic location away from the main tourist areas of the city with easy access to Gare du Nord, Gare de L'Est and the metro with a number of stations within walking distance. The area has a number of decent bars and restaurants (we second the Holybelly recommendation from a previous review, excellent pancakes), you are also located close to Canal Saint-Martin where you will find great night life and quirky shops. Hakan was out of town during our stay, however he was responsive to email communication providing all the information we required for our break. Overall we were very happy with out accommodation and would definitely stay here again.
Hakan's house is stunning: beautiful interiors, lots of quirky details, comfy bed and a breathtaking views from the top floor terrace. The kitchen is beautiful and really makes you want to cook; the bathrooms amazing with their marble sinks and showers.
The Balat neighborhood was a true revelation: we loved staying in a less touristy part of the city, and can truly recommend the Natftalin cafe and vintage shop just down the road, they are lovely people and serve yummy food :) Also a visit to the local hammam was fun :) There are lots of good restaurants nearby too (Hakan will send you some recommendations upon booking), but traveling to the busier parts of the city is also very easy as well. Overall a memorable visit, and we hope to come back to Hakan's house soon!
The house was suitable for 2 guests who had every intention of exploring Paris, and little intention of staying at home for too long. The bed was comfy and the apartment was clean. The quarter is not the most inspiring in Paris, but the 4 metro was right around the corner. The host was not present, but I liked this because it felt like we had more privacy.
I would not recommend for 3 people.
Hakan is a very friendly and respectful traveler. I recommend him to every hosts.
Cool guest. Very accommodating and sympathetic.
I can say is that Hakan left the appartement very clean and was very easy going and friendly in our exchanges. I highly recomend Hakan to the airbnb community.
