From the moment of booking, Gualtiero was nothing but welcoming and cordial. We had a number of emails to clarify things and he was always extremely forthcoming and helpful. We were welcomed to the apartment by his father who was also very personable. The apartment is in a fantastic location and is graciously decorated. It can be a little noisy outside but that didn't bother us at all. The main attractions of Catania are within easy walking distance. A fantastic introduction to Sicily - we are sure to be back!
We spent almost two weeks at Gualtiero's in Catania. Gualtiero is a world-class host and made us feel very welcome. He was very helpful providing information on logistics prior to our arrival as well as helping out during our staying. Before New Years Eve we even found some cake and prosecco in front of our door ;-) When we checked out his dad even gave us a ride to the airport which. We would certainly give Gualtiero 6 stars as a host!
The flat is very nice and the description and photos are representative (it looks even nicer in reality). It is well located in one of the most beautiful streets of Catania, full of Baroque buildings. We decided not to rent a car and were happy with our decision: most attractions are in walking distance. The flat is well equipped and Gualtiero made sure that we had some basics to start with. So we ended up cooking 2-3 times as well. There is a washing machine, TV, and internet is working relatively well too (even streaming movies or (website hidden)ing).
There are also many nice restaurants relatively close by:
1. Il Sale Art Cafè
2. Razmataz Wine Bar
3. Mosaik (beer and tea house; very interesting beers and teas)
4. Terrazza sui Crociferi (belongs to Hotel Royal around the corner, roof terrace with stunning view)
Thanks again, Gualtiero!!!
The apartement is ideally located in the Baroque part of the historic city center of Catania. A lot of the attractions, the fish-market, good restaurants, the opera, shopping opportunities, public transport and also the taxi stand at via Etna can be reached easily by foot.
The apartement is well-kept and offers a lot of charme. The host Gualtiero is very proactive and provided us with a lot of good tips about what to do, where go etc.
Himself beeing out of town, Gualtiero was well organized - his father took care very attentively of us. The day of our departure he even gave us a ride to the airport. Highly recommended.
I will echo a few other reviewers and say that photos don't do this extraordinary place justice. It's comfortably and tastefully appointed, with all of the necessities -- and the platter of fruit and bottle of local wine we were welcomed with was a lovely, generous touch. You can't beat the location; it is centralissimo! We weren't at all bothered by the young revelers who congregate on the steps in front of the church at night, but it's also winter (so we preferred closing the windows at night anyway) and we're from NYC (where this decibel level is pretty much average). We can't wait to come back.
We were booked into this apartment however Gualtiero kindly upgraded us free of charge upon arrival as 'Apartment Sicilian Baroque - 1' became available at the last minute. Gualtiero was away on business at the time so we were met by his father who was very helpful in providing information about Catania and the local area (be sure to check out the nearby fish market and surrounding restaurants!). The apartment itself was beautiful with sizeable and well fitted bedroom, bathroom and living space. The photos don't do it justice. My only word of warning would be the noise at night as the apartment is above a street where people congregated late into the night. It was also opposite a church whose bells appeared to ring at random intervals which began before 8am one morning. But other than that, we had a fantastic stay.
This apartment and it's location was outstanding. Walking distance to all the sights and bus/ train stations. Although our host was working his father was there to meet us with wine and local produce. It really was an amazing stay in a beautifully furnished apartment whose pictures really don't don't do it justice. Would highly recommend this apartment. Thank you Gualtiero and your father.
Appartement au coeur du vieux Catane! Charme et dépaysement garanti! Tout était parfait! Le papa de Gualtiero a été chaleureux et disponible! Je recommande pour une immersion dans la dolce vita!
The pictures do not adequately represent the quaint artchitecture that you are surrounded by. Absolutely loved the flat! It is a fantastic location - a 5 minute walk to just about anything you could want to see in Catania, from restaurants to the markets or to the harbor. Gualitero and his father were wonderful hosts and ensured everything I needed was taken care of.
Full disclosure - the one thing to keep in mind if you stay here is that it can be a little noisy at night due to being in the middle of a lively town. That being said, I would stay here again!
This flat is actually more lovely than the pictures allow, and completely central. It felt very special staying there and we found it to be perfectly suited to our needs. Gualtiero was absolutely amenable and had loads of advice and booklets, maps etc ready for us to help plan our days. We were also greeted in the flat with some local marmalade and honey, basil plant, milk and fresh olive oil to get us started.
Look in a Lonely planet guide or Rough Guide to Sicily and they recommend the Via Crociferi as one of the most beautiful in Catania, as a result the area plays host to a lively night scene on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights which can go on until the early hours.
Aside from the great facilities (nice shower) we felt so happy and comfortable in the flat, we spent one whole day here between day trips just to relax and cooked at home as much as we ate out - the market was so close. Sad to leave..
Gualtiero and Costanza were the perfect guests. It was really a pleasure to meet them both. They were friendly, interesting and great fun. We would highly recommend them as guests and hope to visit their place in Sicily in the near future.
