Tim was an excellent host for our stay at his "Lodge Istanbul" property off of Istiklal. After meeting us, showing us the apartment, and explaining the area, he was pretty hands off and we did not hear from him except for his answering of any questions we had (he responded immediately by email) - a perfect kind of arrangement in my opinion.
The apartment is nice, however, it may be a bit loud for light sleepers or those who like to go to bed early. Within earshot is a restaurant that plays live music late into the night, and also a decently loud call to prayer in the early morning. Despite this, we were able to sleep soundly by wearing earplugs, and by the end of our 9-day stay, the noise hardly bothered us at all.
What makes this property an incredible place to stay is the location. It is located on a side street a block or so directly off of Istiklal, the modern heart of Istanbul, and is within easy walking distance of great shopping, restaurants, bars, cafes, and public transportation with convenient access to the rest of the city (Taksim funicular to the tram, metro, and buses, Tünel funicular to the tram, etc.) - all within about a 5 min walk. The side street itself is lined with market shops and restaurants/cafes as well. While this area of town doesn't go to bed early, I would certainly stay here again as opposed to staying in Sultanahmet, which pretty much closes down completely after around 7-8 o'clock.
My family and I stayed at one of Tim's properties for 9 days and he was a great host. After meeting us, showing us the apartment, and explaining the area, he was pretty hands off and we did not hear from him except for his answering of any questions we had (he responded immediately by email) - a perfect kind of arrangement in my opinion. He provides basic necessities - clean towels, sheets, laundry detergent, tea and coffee, and dishwashing soap, among others - which was very convenient. I can definitely recommend staying with him.
I've been to Lodge Istanbul last june and i really had a good time. Tim is very nice, very helpful and willing, and the apartment is perfect too. Very clean and sunny, in the best part of Istanbul. Just go there and see, you will agree with me!
