Author and traveler. Bay Area resident for 30 years with a special love of desert exploration. Married to Peter, chair of the philosophy department at San Jose State University. What I like? Exploring unusual foods then writing about them. One of my books won the James Beard Award, another the International Cookbook Award. I've also written extensively about the history of the American West. I also enjoy really strong coffee, unusual destinations and new ideas. Movies? Eclectic, from Johnny Suede to Korean melodramas to, well, everything else. My favorite destination is the Copper Canyon in Mexico , where I've led hikes and also explored. Also loved Tibet, Nepal, and China. Life motto? Do good in this world, serve God, and have adventures.
