Great off the beaten path escape. The Zen Den was clean and had all the necessities. Warm and bright with a magnificent picture window looking out on the wooded yard, bird feeder, birdhouse, well kept yard. Comfortable beds. Good shower.
Ferry from the Oregon side leaves ever hour at fifteen past the hour, $5.00 cash only. Going back from the Washington side the ferry leaves ever hour on the hour. Allow 20 minutes to get to the ferry from the Zen Den.
Only issue we had was an Internet connection too slow in the evenings to watch Netflix movies without rebuffering every five minutes or so. Plenty fast in the mornings.
Overall great experience. Highly recommended.
The setting was wonderful, very remote and beautiful with lots of bird feeders all around the yard busy with spring activity and the sound of frogs at night. The accommodations were clean and fairly basic. The only minor complaint is the damp smell, which the host was very clear about. If that's something that would bother you, be aware of it. I intend to stay there again, myself. It was a very convenient base to explore both sides of the lower Columbia, Astoria, and Long Beach without staying where the larger crowds stay.
The Zen-Den is an excellent retreat! We found it to be clean, quiet, and very well stocked with the kind of essentials that are so easy to forget when packing for a short trip; seasonings, cotton swabs, candles, that sort of thing. As a previous review mentioned, there is a slight mildew/old smell. It reminded me of a seldom-used RV or camper--noticeable at first, but not overpowering or gross by any means, and I stopped being aware of it within an hour or two. It's a little rough around the edges, but more in a "work-in-progress" way than "dilapidated and uncared for". All that said, for the price, and the uniqueness of the space and location, I'm not sure there's much better out there. We were able to book on very short notice (3 days, I think), and everything worked out perfectly. The space is cozy, there's some great views, a chorus of frogs, and deer that wander through the property occasionally as well. We enjoyed a beautiful drive to Astoria, and two lovely nights by the gas fireplace.
Thank you for the stay, it was a nice experience!
JD's place was on a peaceful road along a lovely river, has great morning lighting, a toasty gas stove which my cat (who was allowed to come) loved, happy and healthy plants in the living room, a comfortable bed, a newly remodeled kitchen, a great gas cook-stove and a giant cast iron skillet that begged to fry a heaping-helping of eggs.
All these things were great, and perhaps the house just hadn't been aired out in a long while, but there was a strong smell of mold--maybe from a flood? I don't know, but not great if you are sensitive to such things.
Great house with super comfy bed, awesome views and a wonderful wood stove. Very close to the river trail and great shopping and restaurants at the old Mill. Highly recommend staying here. Also, thr views from the deck are awesome!!!
Can't say I will stay here again, but it had everything promised and the wood stove was very pleasant.
The key lock box on the tree, by the door took 10 minutes to open.
The toilet could have used a scrub down before hand. No woman wants to sit on dried urine.
One day, while staying here, all of south Bend was without internet, but in order to restart it, we had to access his router/modem which lives in his locked office. Understandable, but inconvenient. We had to call his very friendly neighbor, Robin, to help us fix the issue. She is the only contact nearby (owner stays in his house in Washington [200+ miles away) while the Bend house is occupied, so he is NO WHERE NEAR to help in case of emergencies. Also has poor cell reception so he isn't always able to answer his phone), but there is apparently some drama between the two, which put us in an awkward position...
Life in the Elochoman Valley is extremely quiet and tranquil. You can experience an abundance of wild life just driving to the Zen-Den and even some right in the yard. The exterior of the property gives way to a clean and comfortable interior. The communications, internet and cell coverage, are very spotty if not non-existent on the property and throughout the entire valley...so plan ahead and be in Cathlamet if you want to reach the outside world. The interior is clean and comfortable.
Thank you Jim, pleasure speaking with you on the phone. I repaired the shower this past weekend.
This was a lovely place to stay! So calm and so peaceful. We really enjoyed watching the feisty, Stellar Jays feeding and bickering over the food provided for them! The Zen Den was clean, yet felt like a cozy home.
The kitchen was fully equipped with cooking supplies, and utensils...oils, spices and other stuff. It seems as if people leave certain bits of condiments in the full-size fridge...so we even had more than we expected or needed!
Also, there were some interesting books that were quite antique and interesting to browse. Thank you!
The listing was accurate. There was a notebook with shopping and dining tips as well as helpful information about the house. The bed was clean and comfortable.
