Upon checking in, we found the house to smell musty and like either cigar smoke or urine. The top of the fridge looked like someone had smeared ketchup all over it and the kitchen itself felt like it had a fine layer of grease on everything. The carpets had stains all over them and there were spider webs with egg sacks in them in every corner. There was old food left in the fridge and mold in the dish drainer. There were thousands of tiny spiders in the kayak making it unusable. The hot tub had been shocked recently and not allowed to properly vent. My wife and I were trying to make the best of it because we had traveled all the way from Long Island NY to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary; however, at around 9PM, my wife began to have problems breathing. I was also having problems but I chalked it up to allergies. While in the house, she told me, she felt as if she would suffocate and die in her sleep. My wife doesn't have asthma or allergies and basically grew up in a cabin so the situation was anything but normal (as per "lake house cabin standards"). We needed to leave and we made Scott aware of the fact. He did not pick up any time I called him, instead allowing it to go to voicemail. He did call back and leave me a message saying he was sorry we were having troubles. He called me back the next morning and when I told him I would need a refund, he hung up on me. I do not recommend this property or this renter. If I could give zero stars I would.
The view was indeed beautiful and Scott was super helpful. Overall, however, the place was not guest-ready. We spent the first 90 minutes of our stay (4 of us) cleaning. And doing so pretty intensely. We were definitely expecting rustic (and are no strangers to a little elbow grease)-- as outlined in the other reviews -- but given what we were paying for a holiday weekend, felt the level of uncleanliness was egregious. It was like opening up a lake house for the season: the table and chairs outside was un-useable, covered in solid layer of dust/dirt; the kayaks were covered in spider webs and dirt and needed to be cleaned out; the outdoor couch needed to be vacuumed; all of the silverware needed to be cleaned - and beyond. We are also big cooks so do not recommend using the oven as it burns quickly. In general, we were disappointed in the experience and felt that the property was not ready for guests. I think with a good maid service to come an hour beforehand it would have an enormous impact on the guest experience. Finally, Scott did stop by unannounced once to pick up a brief case which was fine but also breaking the agreement you usually have when you rent a place. The lake is wonderful, as mentioned in other reviews, so if you have good weather you'll be all set -- as we were.
Highlights: A great location! A beautiful spot on the small lake. Hot tub spectacular. The perfect place for a getaway with or without kids and dogs. Fireplace was nice. Scott was hands off yet accommodating and helpful.
Low lights: Musty smell in the house (bring scented candles) was very strong. Glasses and mugs that were in the cupboard were dirty and needed a deep cleaning before use. Large TV unable to play Netflix and DVD connection not working. Netflix streaming in the bedroom reloaded every few moments so the viewing experience not pleasant, but DVD worked in the bedroom in the end.
Overall it was a good experience, until the owner called to reprimand me for leaving a mess.
The kayaks and hot tub were fantastic. Scott's cabin is in a very quiet neighborhood, and right next to a serene little lake that you can kayak across. There are forests and lakes to explore nearby. Although the furnishings and kitchen appliances are a bit dated the interior was very clean.
Great location for a peaceful, quiet get-away to the countryside.
Scott's place is beautiful and he is nice as can be. He met us when we got there to go over the property and it is even better than what the pictures show. The lake view can be seen by every room in his place. The bedroom has a direct door to the deck and hot-tub. He has two easy to use kayaks (trust me I haven't done it in 20 years) you can use to roam around the lake and at his suggestion you can bring a cocktail on your trip:) His grill is great and we ate on the deck every night.
Highly recommend. You won't be disappointed.
Scott is a nice guy and the cabin is exactly as its pictured. Its in a beautiful secluded part of the lake (which was really more like a pond if you ask me) As another reviewer mentioned, the kayaks and jacuzzi are great features,as is the grill and the ability to bring your dog. The place definitely seems like a bachelor pad, with lots of high tech TV/streaming video & music. A few things for future visitors to note: Scott had plenty of towels, but make sure to bring your own soap, shampoo, etc. Also, we found that most all of the plates, silverware and cooking utensils we're dirty, so plan accordingly. While we really enjoyed swimming at the beach (about a 7 minute walk away), most people wouldn't want to swim right off the cabin's dock since there is a lot of pond gunk in the water there. Oh and bring something to entertain yourself with if it rains, because there is not much to do within a 1 hour radius of the location. The late check-in and early (9am) check out was kind of a bummer, but maybe that's typical for this type of rental.
Scott's Lakehouse Cabin is the perfect setting for those looking to get away from "it all" and genuinely relax. The cabin is a very large 1 bedroom house with multiple common areas, a dining room, large kitchen, massive porch (w/ built-in jacuzzi), and a garden yard that leads into the lake via a private entrance w/ accompanying dock. It's a bit "Dawson's Creek," and I mean that in a good way. Scott has equipped the place with Roku boxes in each room for access to Netflix, Amazon Video, etc; while adding amazing surround sound in the TV Room. It rocks!
The view is stunning. You'll find the area is very quiet, particularly on a weekday. There are two small private beaches within a 5 minute walk. Dog lovers will not only love letting the dogs swim out Scott's backyard, but letting them run and swim along the private beaches (of course, observing any off leash rules). The beaches are small but not crowded at all.
A couple of towns nearby with all of the restaurants, shopping, entertainment that one would probably need. Hartford is only 25 minutes away and certainly has plenty to do.
As others have suggested, don't expect the cabin to be chic or luxurious accommodations. Everything in terms of amenities, utensils, storage is more than available. Being that it sits on a lake, expect the conditions to be more like a beach house...with sand/dirt commonly draped in without avoidance. There is no 24 hour maid service folks...take those expectations to the W in Downtown Hartford.
All in all, Scott's place was a great experience. I would rent it again when looking to get away and relax, kayak, hike, and let the dogs run free...
We had a wonderfully relaxing stay at Scott's place. His house is situated in a perfect place on the lake--the view from the deck is idyllic. We watched the Fourth of July fireworks from the hot tub! The local beaches are small, but not crowded at all, and really clean. We brought the fishing gear too, and fished off the end of the dock at the back of the house. You'll find everything you need in the kitchen for cooking (and cleaning up), and the bathroom was well stocked with toilet paper, soap and towels. A quiet, luxurious and restorative stay!
We had a really nice stay, quiet week-end, kayak from thé house and great view on the lake from the jacuzzi.
My husband and I stayed at this beautiful lakehouse last week for our 3 year wedding anniversary. We wanted to do something small and quiet and just get away from the busy hectic life of the city. And this was a great place to do just that. It was quiet and the view of the lake from the bedroom was just beautiful. The kayaks and hot tub were definitely pluses. Its an old house so don't expect it to be some 5 star hotel type place. You do need to bring your own supplies such as your bath supplies.
And it is someone's home so be respectful. The owner Scott is a wonderful and very accommodating host with a beautiful dog. Our dog came as well with us with a small fee. And he just loved it. Scott recommended a very nice dog park which was just amazing. It's also a great park if you wanted to do something close to the lakehouse.
