Couldn't have had a better experience staying at Richie's place in the hills above the coast. Falling asleep and waking up to the sounds of the jungle (and the ocean on quiet nights) and cool air was a nice break from accommodations down by the ocean.
Richie was an excellent host who shared his bananas and awesome banana bread with us. We're only sorry we couldn't have stayed longer to chat with him more!
As others have mentioned, it's a steep drive up. But, don't be deterred, the trek is totally worth it.
Terrific host, beautiful setting, comfy room. It's about 3 km up a bumpy road from the main highway, which might hinder some people, but we loved it. Really enjoyed the quiet beach and little waterfall.
Richie was AWESOME! His house is in a beautiful spot, away from the beach but truly in a jungle setting. Richie was very helpful and even cooked us a delicious vegetarian breakfast in the morning!
The property was quiet and we spent our mornings reading books and resting. There are a couple waterfalls nearby and a short walk up the road from Richie's house are some amazing views of Playa Ballenas.
We would certainly stay with Richie again! Hopefully we can make our way back to Costa Rica again soon.
We had a Great time at Richies place! We stayed up in the tower and we really felt like jungle birds. Got to hear and be right in the jungle each morning and enjoy cooler breezes for sleeping then if we were down by the ocean. The drive up is an adventure too but only a few minutes from really beautiful beaches. Didn't get to see the waterfall, next time. He was a great super friendly host. Highly recommend staying at his place. He greeted us at a restaurant and led us up to his place, offered us cold beer and fresh fruit. We will be back. Thanks again Richie.
Richie is a wundervoll layed back host and we had a really great time staying with him! We had the room on the 1st floor in the tower and it is as shown on the picture, very clean, cosy and with a great view. The beach at Villa Leonore was the most beautiful beach we've seen in Costa Rica. Richie was a great help with everything and ask him for the hidden waterfall! :) We can definitely recommend Richie and his place and if we ever return to Costa Rica we will stay with hin again.
Richie takes care of you, however clueless you might be in the depths of Costa Rica. He has an idyllic location up in the hills, complete with paths to waterfalls and rivers. After bananas for breakfast you can head out 10 minutes to the beach, where Richie has an arrangement with a private beach owner for access. You can station here to chill, eat, relax and plan. You will sleep better at Richie's place than anywhere else in Costa Rica. There is magic under and over the ground.
Driving up to Richie's place for the first time - following behind him on his motorbike, the cicadas going off like sirens (don't worry: only at a certain time of day) - was surreal! Super fun and beautiful. And the place is as it looks: a cozy fortress plopped down in the middle of the jungle. There's plenty of land to explore, with little trails off into the property. Room had all the amenities you need. Richie himself is a super welcoming host. Super friendly and good to talk to. And a master cook of some gallo pinto breakfast! His buddies at the Villa Leanor also helped us organize some tour stuff we wanted to check out, which was very helpful. Also, they have crazy good BBQ on Sundays down there. Plus a beautiful beach.
All in all: *pretty* good. Thanks Richie!
Note: there are - or at least were - three different rooms he sublets in that tower. You can check out his profile for the others.
'Nother note: You're *probably* going to want a car here (getting up via taxi is possible, but not particularly cheap). 2WD is fine.
Richie was such a warm and welcoming host! We only stayed one night as we were back through Uvita/Bellena. He came and met us to guide us to his place which was very helpful since there are no addresses in Costa Rica. He also gave us access to the Bellena Country Club beach which was beautiful and somewhat private - fun swimming beach. Also, Richie was very quick to respond and accept our booking which was very helpful for us we biked last minute with a change of plans. He also provides breakfast in the morning!
What can I say...Richie is definitely the host with the most!!! We had a great time staying there! Waking up to the sounds of the jungle was amazing and you'll get a glance at some wonderful animals too.
We had such a great time here! After 28 hours in transit I wouldn't want to be anywhere but at Richies! We arrived very late and although we were unsuccessful in communicating our arrival time with Richie he still stayed up awaiting our arrival. We were greeted with a welcoming hug and cold, fresh, delicious mountain water! He even offered us food at this crazy late hour! In the morning we were pleasantly surprised when Richie made us a delicious typical Costa Rican breakfast with fresh fruit and coffee. Later we enjoyed a dip in the refreshing pool with an amazing view!!
Richie's place was super clean and comfortable and the description is accurate. I would highly recommend staying here!
