Recent trips to DC are the result of a grant our University received from the U.S. Dept of State summer 2010. The focus of the two-year grant is the support of entrepreneurship in five countries of West Africa. We wish to continue engagement beyond the close of the grant Sept 2012 and for this reason are researching ways to make this happen. Last week (13 – 16 Sep) while in DC to meet with congressional leaders, the University's President, Dr. Katherine Rowe Fell and I touched base with Dr. Curtis Huff of the State Dept (Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs) to bring him up-to-date on our grant activities. Throughout the week we met with folks from Africare, USAID, USAfrican Development Foundation, Corporate Counsel on Africa and others in search of new avenues of engagement and involvement for our students either in corporate offices in DC or in the field in Africa. Recommendations to continue the dialogue with others became greater than time remaining on the schedule. My Oct trip to DC is to attend the Oct 4/5 program (recommended to us last week) sponsored by USAID and the Corporate Council on Africa: AFRICA: Why? Where? How?, to meet with others who were in Africa last week and have since or soon will return to the US, and to call on an alumna. She is a 96-year-old woman who graduated from then Findlay College in 1936 (her mother graduated in 1902!) I look forward to this return to Washington.
