My two cents...the apt is on the 7th floor. This could be awesome if there was a lift...but no lift in the building. I m glad i quit smoking. 2nd i noticed and made me really worried the fact that there was no hot (email hidden)w i know that there is no need for that.
I loved the fact that the point has life 24hours since there is a very central hospital next to the apartment. All the taxi drivers knew the address which is something unique for Dhaka. The apt was clean and the host's brother very accommodating. Overall i m satisfied and i can recommend the apt for someone who wants to feel the bit of the residential area, close to the city centre.
I would like to thank you Vaios for selected stay at my roof top apartment. I hope......you have to enjoyed roof top terrace and Dhaka . Take care Rafiq
Jahagir, Rafiq's brother, is one of the most friendliest, hospitable hosts ever. Though at first I was a little concerned as he wasn't answering for a while when I arrived, this was immediately made up - however this didn't end up being too big a problem as I made friends with some locals who I asked for help (possibly the most hospitable country too!). Jahagir graciously offered me food, and was always there to get me a rickshaw/CNG.
The studio itself is quite basic accommodation - a mattress, a kitchen, bathroom and of course the lovely view of the neighbourhood. As it's on the rooftop though expect a little exercise! No hot water but it's likely you won't need it. A little rough around the edges - expect a roach or two and perhaps a gecko. I was provided a towel, toilet paper, sheets, but the wifi wouldn't work (though Jahagir definitely tried his best to get it going/get information). Some of the stuff lying around the apartment is a bit dusty but the place is nice enough! A lovely space you can have all to yourself and definitely worth the price, especially if you split between 2-3 people (there's a double and single mattress).
Thank you for advice Bianca.
I enjoyed my stay at this place. You can get a nice aerial view of an ordinary Dhaka neighborhood and the street below.
The place is reasonably clean and has adequate facilities. Since it is high up on a building, it gets a lot of breeze to make air conditioning unnecessary.
Considering the fact that you can have the whole apartment and terrace to yourself, it is good value for the money for Dhaka where low cost hotels are hard to find (for foreign tourists, at least).
I've spend 3 Months business related in Dhaka. I had a wonderfull stay in that amazing city. Rafiqul, the host, is a super friendly and relaxed guy living in germany. The person you will have contact most and which is your contact person in Bangladesh is his brother Jahagir. I had a really warm welcome and Jahagir did his best to make my stay as comfortable as possible. If you need something, just tell him and he will arrange everything. As example i had problems with the water-supply for two days. When I mentioned it to Jahagir, he installed a completly new waterpump the next day.
The room has a new Wifi-router which works perfectly, a computer you can use, a TV, Fridge, Kitchen, different Fans for the hot season, Western-style bathroom (no hot water though) and the doors all lock thight (a previous poster mentioned that they don't). Dhanmondi is a neighborhood right in the middle of Dhaka and everything you need to buy you can get within a few minutes. Bashundara City Mall is a 10 Minutes Walk and you can get everything there). It is away from Gulshan and Banani, the fancy expats-neighborhood, so you will be the only tourist around (which I like when i travel). But don't worry, you are absolut safe there and the people you will met on a daily base are really nice and will threath you as a friend within minutes (and will remembre you). You have a lot of privacy on your rooftop and it's as calm as that city can be. To find your way to the apartment it's the easiest to say to the Rikshaw/GNC driver to drop you in front Green Life Hospital. Then you just turn into Crescent Road and it's the first Building/Door on the right.
The room is well maintained, but it still is an old building in Dhaka so keep that in mind when you have your expectations about it. Yes you will have mosquitos and geckos sometimes. If you can't handle that you better look for a fancy Hotel in Gulshan 2. If you want to have your own home away from home in a normal Dhaka neigborhood and really have contact with the people of that city I can recommend that apartement honestly. Especially when you stay a little longer but want to have your own furnished room you get a pretty good price/value here. Not to mention the help you get from Jahagir if you need it.
I will stay here again when I'm in Bangladesh again.
After our successful AIRBNB stay in Bangalore, we decided to give it a try in Dhaka as well. Rafique is not around as he lives in Germany, but his brother takes care of the apartment while he is away.
We arrived quite late at the apartment, but his brother helped us out to actually get to the apartment (over the phone) and afterwards to get us some food. In the days we stayed here he also helped us out with getting a cycle rickshaw or a CNG (at local prices) to the places we needed to visit.
There is no internet at the apartment and don't expect a bed. The bed is a mattress on the floor (which by the way is quite good!). There is a little kitchen, with a kettle, a toaster and a stove. We did not use these, so we are not sure if they work. Sometimes we had issues with water pressure, but just make sure you have the bucket filled at all times.
No toiletpaper and towels were provided. We hope this will be the case for future guests.
Compared to other AIRBNB stays during our trip, this property would be below average for the price we paid. However, for Bangladeshi (Dhaka) standards it would be an OK place to stay, also taking into account the helpfulness of his brother. Just try not to stay too long in Dhaka, other parts of Bangladesh are so much better!
We decided to return to this apartment the second time we were in Dhaka.
Tip how to get to the apartment: Tell the taxi or CNG driver to be transported to Green Life Hospital on Green Road. The apartment is in between Farmgate and New Market.
Thank you very much for your suggest.
Rafiqul responded quickly to emails and his brother lives downstairs and will be your host, as Rafiqul does not live in Dhaka anymore. His brother is very friendly and helpful and can guide you in the neighborhood around the apartment.
Both doors can be locked right now, and the apartment was being upgraded while I was staying there. If I understood it right, there is also a pc coming with internet for guests, so this is convenient too.
I left earlier because I found more permanent housing, as I am staying in Dhaka for 3 months, but I will recommend to book this apartment if you are looking for an apartment in the Dhanmondi area.
The host was not there, but his father took good care of giving me the keys and collect them back. The host anwered fast my comments by email and comunicate to his father who was also able to speak a bit of English and seemed to be a nice person. The place was convenient to me and it looks like well located. In Green Road you can find easily were to eat, buy things or check your email. The apartment is of good size and with all the minimum things including air conditioning. There was some cuts in water and electricity, but I consider those normal in Bangladesh. I can only find two issues, one of the doors dont work properly and needs repair; the other the lack of internet. However, there was many places close where you can check your email for 30/40 TK per hour. I think the price is very good for that location, so I consider my review positive and I might come back in a future.
My wife and I had a fine stay at Rafiqul's place, we even ended up extending our stay. The building itself is a little rough looking but the apartment is fairly clean and comfortable, with aircon, tv, and lots of windows and breathing space. We thought it was great value, especially given the high prices of Dhaka hotels.
Rafique is a great guy now living in Berlin. He hosted us, a group of 4 Dutch guys, back in 2005. His appartment is located on a roof, far away from the intense hustle and bustle on the Dhaka streets. You can spent a nice time on the roof enjoying the view having a quiet drink. The building itself is clean, has a floor with tiles, and includes kitchen and a bathroom incl toilet.
