I am a retired Naval Officer and Desert Storm Veteran. In addition to airbnb listings in WashingtonDC and Virginia, I have vacation rental properties around the world! An internet search for Spence Witten is sure to 'find' me or my son.

Great stay at Spence's this past week. Host was friendly and accommodating. The room is just as described (not the Ritz, but very clean & comfortable + a great shower). Location is convenient to the train - once you know the shortcut. I'd highly recommend!
I certainly enjoyed my stay in this private bedroom and bathroom in Spence's renovated Williamsburg cottage. It's a walk of under a minute over a bridge and into the east end of the historic district (hello, Christiana Campbell's Tavern!), and a very short drive along Lafayette or Francis Streets, (or a nice peaceful walk through the historic district of Colonial buildings on Duke of Gloucester Street) to the stores and restaurants of Merchant's Square ("DoG Street" Pub, The Cheese Shop, The Trellis, etc.), and the "old campus" of William & Mary. Seriously, the value is terrific for the location.
I was very kindly welcomed, both by Spence's tenant Rick (who rents the front portion of the house) and by Spence himself who was in town doing some work on his various properties. Both gentlemen kindly allowed for as much or as little interaction as I preferred during my stay, and we shared some friendly conversations and stories. The bedroom and bathroom are furnished simply and comfortably, exactly as pictured. Amenities in the clean and convenient kitchen adjacent to the room include a great gas stove, and a state-of-the-art washer/dryer for laundry. I didn't have too much time to enjoy the living room space, as I was either working in Newport News or visiting the campus (my alma mater) during most of my stay, but the living room and dining area were also furnished nicely, again, exactly as pictured. While staying in the winter, the bedroom heat could get strong at night, so I adjusted the vent above the bed, and Rick adjusted the settings, and I slept comfortably -- I'm confident that issue is being adequately addressed. And in case you're wondering (as I was before booking), the private entrance from the outside back deck to the bedroom is actually visible in one of the photographs -- you'll spot it in the mirror over the bed! (Thanks to Spence for pointing that out!) Or entry into the cottage is very easy through the kitchen.
Let me add that, in addition to offering coffee and toast in the morning, Rick went above and beyond all hospitality standards by racing to catch me in his work vehicle when I accidentally left my winter coat behind on my departure to the airport! That's the kind of genuine personal kindness from the best Airbnb hosts that makes for such a great experience for travelers. People often say, in their reviews, "I'd stay here again…" well, not only would I certainly stay here again, I've already booked my NEXT stay at Spence's Williamsburg cottage for this coming fall, and I intend to stay at some of his other properties in the future as they become available. I recommend it to any and all looking for a quiet experience as they explore Colonial Williamsburg or the surrounding areas (and don't forget to take a scenic drive - especially in the fall - along the Colonial Parkway, easily accessed just a few blocks from the cottage.)
I stayed at Spence's house for six days while I was doing research at the Colonial Williamsburg Library. The house was extremely conveniently located, less than 5 minutes walk from the archives and you could easily get to the Colonial Williamsburg area within a few minutes walk as well. The house is very well equipped with a nice kitchen and washer/dryer that you can use. Spence does not actually live in the house, so I only met him once very briefly. It was more like a house mate situation than a typical host/airbnb guest situation as I shared with Rick, an older gentleman who rents the front part of the house. Rick was very friendly and interested in what I was up to, and he made coffee every day and offered me help getting to the grocery store and train station.
There were some temperature issues in the bedroom where I stayed (too hot), which is to be expected in an older house that's been renovated, but they did the best they could adjusting it whenever I asked. Overall, I think this is a great spot from which to see Colonial Williamsburg and the library and I would recommend it.
My stay at the sleeping nook was pleasant, affordable, and convenient. Spence dropped by briefly and asked if I had any concerns. Overall I enjoyed my experience and I'd recommend this place to anyone who needs to stay in DC.
A nice place to stay and a nice room. I felt very welcome.
This is a quaint neighborhood, which I enjoyed during a prior stay at another airbnb location a block away. Spence's home looks like a well done property brothers remodel; The interior is bright, modern, with several design touches that remind you you're in a historic area. These aren't big homes, but the airbnb room is well appointed with a desk, plenty of shelves, a very comfortable bed, and a clean updated bathroom. The kitchen is top-notch, with brand new appliances including a gas stove.
I recommend this accommodation for any length stay. With a separate entrance and parking right outside, it's hard to beat.
My stay (13 hrs) and interaction with Spence were brief. He was welcoming and the garden level (modestly renovated basement) was adequate for the price point.
Staying at Spence's listing was great. Public transportation and grocery were within a mile, the accommodations were comfortable, and Spence is a charismatic host. If I am passing through DC in the future I wouldn't hesitate to stay at one of his listings.
Great place.Comfortable with well-equipped facilities.Close to metro station with in less than 10 minutes walking. What is more, Spence is a very nice person.I have already begun to think about the next visit to the house.
This was a great room in a prime location in Williamsburg. Very easy access to the Colonial areas, William & Mary, etc. Also convenient to dining and morning coffee. The room was recently renovated and well-appointed, with a small en suite and private access, which suited my needs exactly.
Spence was a wonderful guest, clean, great to talk to, communicated well. During his 2 day stay we had a great time, he even took us out to dinner! Welcome back any time!
