Charming neighbourhood and equally charming host, couldnt have been more helpful and polite. A lovely apartment with special interior.
Luke was the perfect host, welcoming us into his wonderful historic home. The house is a real slice of architectural history with elements from the past left on display such as layers of wallpaper (fascinating), old gas fittings, original cupboards, shutters and spiral stairs. If you like atmospheric old houses this is the place to stay! Luke very kindly upgraded us to the self-contained flat, the beds were very comfortable and there is a jacuzzi bath too! Breakfast was plentiful and varied. There are many books dotted around on architecture and art which were interesting to flick (website hidden) cap it all Luke offered to give us a lift next day to the local University as it was raining! As a first visit to Dumfries we could not have asked for more, and not forgetting the very welcome bottle of wine when we arrived!
Luke couldn't have been more helpful when we arrived. He showed us round the flat and made us aware of what was where. The flat itself couldn't be in a better location, central to almost everything in Dumfries. It's a smashing big flat and, if you're not bothered about flashy things, is exactly what you need if you are looking for somewhere to lay your head down. I'm so glad we found Luke as this was the perfect place for us for the weekend.
Id like to say that this was a 'home from home'. However, if I was lucky enough for this to be my home - I wouldn't be leaving it to stay anywhere else. The house is a beautiful eclectic mix of reclaimed items which have an original patina of time that cannot be recreated in fashionable contemporary shabby chic. To describe it as 'preserved decay' is meant as a compliment in every way -the house is totally unique. It has a comfortable friendly 'lived in and loved' feel throughout and Luke couldn't have been more pleasant or accommodating during our stay. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for him. A fabulously interesting place to stay which we would thoroughly recommend and very much hope to revisit.

If your ideal place to stay is an impersonal, one-size-fits-all Travelodge room, then this flat probably won't be your cup of tea, but I thought it was absolutely beautiful and it was a privilege to be able to stay there. Luke was very friendly and helpful - he had bought milk, wine and biscuits for us, and I was visiting for work and needed to look reasonably smart, so he let me borrow his ironing board. We even got to meet Mr Claws the Big Black Cat, although he did keep to his own quarters! The flat was also much warmer than I had, somehow, expected from the description, and very comfortable, and it could not have been more conveniently located.
We travelled to Dunfries for the weekend, originally booking two nights in Luke's flat. Meeting up with Luke was straightforward and we were made to feel at home from the get go, with our host willing to give a bit extra by producing a hair-dryer and parking permits on request. The flat surpassed expectations and description, with a peaceful ambiance and charm that was quite haunting. Such was the allure of the beautifully decorated and furnished premises, it felt like a chore to leave it and explore the town.
A particular mention has to be made of, what is surely, the most comfortable bed in Scotland gracing the 3rd floor bedroom; the most enjoyable and restful sleep on the road or at home!
The property is in a pretty unassuming street which made its attraction even more special.
So pleasent was the experience, we decided to stay an extra night. The booking update was easy and a third night was as agreeable as the other two.
I would unreservedly recommend Luke's lovely flat. Indeed, I would go as far as to say, that having the opportunity to stay in the beautiful, charming property, would be worth travelling to Dumfries for. Thank you Luke
Karen and Elaine were a pleasure to host - the perfect guests.
Thank you both for staying - and for such a lovely, kind review!
Luke is a wonderful host. The house is a fabulous treasure trove - every room providing a visual history of the house and it's inhabitants. The semi-stripped wallpaper dating back to the 19th century provides a unique backdrop to the eclectic array of furniture and artwork. Books tumble off tables and you just want to be able to read them all during your visit. A welcome cup of tea and a tray of biscuits was served in the walled garden on my arrival - absolutely delicious. The bedroom itself was very comfortable and I would gladly return if I should visit Dumfries again.
The flat was a beautiful rustic Georgian flat on 2 levels with 2 bedrooms and ample facilities with a kitchen and sitting room. The flat was clean and comfortable and great to get washing done after a days hiking in the area. It was a perfect launch spot for many of the great hikes around the Dumfries area and easy walking distance (meters) to stores/pubs and restaurants..
Stayed at Luke's place mid September. Brilliant central location. Accommodation as described - historical but comfortable.
This stay was for my niece Laura, who was in Dumfries just prior to starting a semester abroad at the University of Glasgow campus there. In setting up the stay I found Luke responsive and easy to work with, and he treated Laura as the adult she is. She was extraordinarily happy during her stay.
Laura says, "Luke went out of his way to ensure that my time was comfortable and easy. He even made sure that I got to my student housing at the end of my stay. The room and ensuite bathroom had everything I needed, and the bed was very comfortable. The garden was lovely, the house cozy and filled with interesting books and items from his travels. Luke also has extensive knowledge about architecture and buildings in Dumfries and happily told me the history of many of the places in town."
It was nice to have Luke and his family here for a few days, they are polite, respectful and friendly, I would highly recommend them as guests.
Luke was always courteous, and was a clean, tidy and an unobtrusive guest. He is welcome to stay anytime.
