We spent the afternoon at Caelaverock, the site of the Maxwell Clan Castle. By the time we got to Luke's home it was rainy and a bit chilliy. The greeting we recieved was warming and welcoming. The home is aptly named. Its charm and character exceeded only by the host's. The bedroom was warm and cozy, the ensuite bathroom modern and clean. The house's decor was a reflection of its owner, literate, interesting and eclectic. Filled with books in every corner, furnished with antiques, and all overseen by Mr. Claws a lovely cat.
In the morning Luke fixed us a fine Scottish breakfast and even saw us to the train station. I highly reccomend Luke and his characterful house.
Luke's flat is something really special, as said by others it's not for everyone but we loved it.
We came up to stay from Manchester for a short stay and to visit near by gardens. It was easy to find and car parking is just as cross the way on near by residential roads.
We were greeted by Donald who was waiting in for us whilst luke was away. Donald was incredibly helpful and even dropped us off an article to read about the gardens we were off to visit the following day. We met mr claws, Luke's cat, who was very friendly and lived in the downstairs apartment with Luke ( I secretly wanted to steal him and cuddle him for the night but wasn't allowed). The kitchen is fully equipped and a great place to sit and drink the night away. In the fridge was a lovely bottle of wine (which I'm still trying to find in England). We didn't really use the sitting room and spent most of our time in the kitchen cooking and talking. If you love architecture and period features this place is for you, if you want modern clean lines and a TV go elsewhere. It's a great flat to explore and admire how people lived in simpler times.
The upstairs bedroom was very comfortable and with having the bathroom on the same floor makes getting ready for bed a lot nicer than going up and down stairs. From the bedroom you can hear birds, they made us laugh a lot. I'm not sure if they were crows, magpies or seagulls but they were 'laughing' which made us laugh a bit too much when we were meant to be sleeping..
On departure day we made a last min decision to visit laggan outdoor centre to have a go on the zip wire. It's less than an hour away by car and was great fun. We didn't get to see much of Dumfries and would like to go back to see some more. We would defiantly stay here again.
we loved our stay here - this is a very comfortable flat with unique decor. it's right in the middle of dumfries, so a brilliant location for exploring the town and surrounding countryside. the bottles of beer in the fridge were very welcome - as was the coffee, tea etc in the well-stocked kitchen. and the sun shone, too, for our easter holidays - perfect!
Luke was a charming and friendly host. He made me feel at home in his wonderful old house. Bedroom was a delight, and at last wonderful feather pillows. Plus the great cat who popped in for a late night play.
Luke was an excellent host, made us feel really welcome and responded quickly to enquiries and requests. An lovely flat with great character, excellently appointed. We had a great time and would definitely stay again.
Made very welcome like one of the family. House in central Dumfries. Easy access to all amenities.
Luke cooked my supper which was delicious.
Very comfortable clean bed.
Transported back in time to when the house was built as there is the life story of the house visible in the building.
The place was old and rustic, which was great. The bathroom was modern and kept up with, and the place was overall an enjoyable experience. Luke was very helpful and friendly, he gave us keys for the night and took the time to give a tour of the place, tell us about the city and himself, and even drew us a map of some recommended places. Had a few enjoyable conversations.
What an unexpected treasure of a find right in the centre of Dumfries! Luke, an architect by profession, has carefully restored a whole Georgian house, built in the early 1800s, to be an extremely comfortable place to stay - but, very unusually, he has managed to leave the house very much in the 19th century! Which is to say: original locks on the doors, walls in what seem to be the original distemper hues of soft warm greens browns and creams - shades and finishes you rarely see today. Unvarnished stairs and floorboards.
And against this 200-year-old background, modern appliances, a lovely Smeg fridge and elegant lamps, a brilliant large jacuzzi bath, great bedding, warm cozy rooms, and very comfortable beds. An elegant and unusual mix of styles, and a treat to be able to straddle two such different time periods for a few days.
We had come to Dumfries for the screening at the town's South West Picture Show of a film made back in 1981 by my husband and his American colleague, and Luke managed to get a ticket to be there when we presented the film, which was much appreciated. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay there again on our next trip to Dumfries- thank you Luke!
Don't let the peeling paint on the front door deter you... or the clutter in the entry way. Your room is very clean, cozy, and comfortable. It is also a rarity in British accommodations, an "ensuite" - which means a private shower and 'water closet' (toilet) adjacent to the room. Luke is a very gracious host who has a deep knowledge and appreciation for the exceptionally rich architectural heritage of this area (ask him about the 17th century buildings that were recently torn down a few blocks away). Oh, and he makes an outstanding English breakfast if you ask. The place is also within easy walking distance of the center of the town, which is full of shops, restaurants, and historical amenities.
Luke was a genial and hospitable host who cheerily went out his way to be accommodating. His home is as charming as described here and his scrambled egg and bacon breakfast is not to be missed!
Luke was always courteous, and was a clean, tidy and an unobtrusive guest. He is welcome to stay anytime.
