I live in a historic 100-year old house in the Mission district of San Francisco, one of the most walking-friendly places in the US, and I don't own a car and bike and walk everywhere when I'm at home. When traveling, I prefer locations that are very walkable, and I don't like staying in sterile hotels. I grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, but after 20 years of snow I left, and lived & worked in Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, LA, Portland, and Seattle before setting down in SF about 10 years ago.
I pay the bills working as an engineer, developing devices for tracking medical equipment as they move through a hospital. By night, I'm often on the nearest tango dance floor until midnight or 1, a great way to to meet interesting people as well as avoid the blues (so to speak) while on business travel. Fortunately for all the airbnb vendors here, business is looking good, and I'm likely to be doing a lot of traveling in 2012, especially to the east coast.
I had a good experience using airbnb earlier this year when traveling with a friend, and decided to strike out on my own and create my own account.
