US Navy Sailing Team Captain for Three Years
The host canceled my reservation 9 days before arrival.
Although we were quite disappointed and were realllly excited about the sailboat stay with John and a ride out the next day, I do not blame John for this as it appears it was out of his control. I like to see the best in people and I don't believe he is screwing us per say. I think he really felt badly and would not like to see him penalized too much for having to cancel our reservation. We will replace it with another and hope that one goes through as it should with this great site!
Thank you John and good luck with it all.

We really enjoyed staying on John's boat & sailing with him, so we booked another weekend.
We had a great time. John was a patient and nice host, and our stay was as expected, RE-LA-XING. Next time we will take the time to let John lead an ocean expedition for us.
One detail : we will bring our own sheets next time.

There isn't anything that we can say that other hasn't but would like to share with everyone our itinerary:
7/2/11 – Drove in late (8:00 PM) so we sleep the night on the John’s boat. It was extremely comfortable my wife, 3 year old daughter and I sleep one of the bed. My 2 year old son slept with grandmother on one of side bed where the kitchen was. Grandfather slept in another bed where the kitchen was. Imaging 6 people sleeping comfortable and we had space to move around. At the port they have a nice men and woman shower/restroom with unlimited hot water. We were really comfortable taking shower here. As you can see with 2 kids I thought we would have a rough trip but they really enjoyed it.
7/3/11 – John start sailing at 4:00 A.M to Catalina Island like he mentioned and by the time we woke up at around 10:00 A.M. we were almost there. Throughout the trip, John and his shipmate (also name Catalina) was extremely accommodating to our every need.
John cooked us breakfast, lunch and dinner for the entire trip. We requested Asian food and to our surprise John was able to deliver. We requested seafood and he went and purchased large shrimp, 6 lbs yellow tail and was excellent in grilling them. I like the fact that he feed provided vegetable and kept things light.
NOON – John dropped us off at Catalina and we spent the day snorkeling and swimming with our kids. The water was kind of cold but we made the best of it. We eat ice creams, hot dogs and the kids/grandparents were extremely happy and relax.
6:00 P.M. – With John’s connection, he was able to secure a mooring since it would have been tough sleeping that night. John picked us up in his row boat, it was tough getting in and out with 2 kids but John was extremely patient and making sure that everyone was safe. In the process, he saved us some money because it would cost us $6 dollar per person to get back to the boat. For dinner grilled shrimp, rice and bokchoy (YUMMY!!!).
8:00 P.M. – our grandparents put our kids to sleep while my wife, I, John, and Catalina took a stroll through Catalina Island and we got some late night cocktails and had a good conversation about his dream and goals. GOOD LUCK JOHN!!!
7/4/11 – After breakfast we started sailing for home. Before sailing home, John took us around the island to enjoy the Beautiful view. We sailed all the way home and enjoyed the weather, I took off my shirt and got some tan laying on the boat and had a good nap. We got into the harbor around 5:00 P.M. our family went and cleaned up while John and Catalina grilled the yellow-tail for dinner with vegetables. Don’t forget to ask John about the TARTER sauce, the fish taste better with it. HEHEHE. We sat at the harbor and enjoyed the fireworks with some wine. A perfect ending to a perfect trip. Thanks John for getting us what we want out of the trip. SPECIAL thanks to Catalina for taking care/feeding our daughter. The trip wouldn’t be complete without you and your assistance. Your loving and caring for our kids are greatly appreciated. Next time, my wife and I will stay on your boat to enjoy Redondo Beach.
Had a great experience, the sailboat was exactly as described -- no surprises. John's a great guy, gave exactly what was promised and accommodated with an evening sail that was wonderful!
Location in Redondo Beach is PERFECT -- nice shower facilities in the marina, and close to all manner of restaurants and The Strand!
Excellent value. John is a fabulous host, cooking me breakfast and dinner one evening as my friend arrived late. He also arranged an extra week's parking for my car at the marina as we were taking off to Palm Springs. There are no drawbacks but be aware you are on a boat and space is limited
We were thrilled about our honeymoon stay on Johns boat. John is a pleasant host and we would recommend the boat for anyone looking to escape to a beautiful area that is relaxing and low key. Our favorite restaurants were Samba and Ruby! Must eat there. Joes for breakfast is good too. We have been talking about the food and showing off the pictures of the sailboat since we have been back. We spent a day in Hollywood but couldn't wait to get back to Redondo Beach. We spent most every day on the pier just walking around. We will be back.
My boyfriend and I stayed 3 days at John’s boat. In our roadtrip of 3 weeks through the USA, it was our best overnight stay!
The boat is cosy, clean, situated in a nice and safe neighborhood, very good showers are available at the boat house, so everything you want on holiday is present!
John gave us a very welcome on our first evening in LA and gave us some nice tips about supermarkets, restaurants, …
On John’s boat: you are free to come and go, so after some while, you really feel like having a cosy home in the harbor of LA.
On Saturday afternoon, we went sailing together with John, one of the most amazing experiences on our trip: besides the sailing experience, we will really remember the hundreds of dolphins we saw (and photographed!) while sailing. (John’s really impressed us with his sailing experience)
So, if you want something different than a standard touristic hotel, some more adventure, a more personal welcome you really should consider a stay at John’s place!
Had a blast on the boat with John! John was kind, had plenty of fascinating stories, and an all around great attitude! Not bad at cooking either (Mmm kabobs...and strawberry-ginger snap parfaits!) John taught me how to row a dinghy (well...as best he could!), showed me the ropes of sailing (literally), and I thoroughly enjoyed his company at Two Harbors on Catalina Island. If you want to experience the nitty gritty of being a sailor, while enjoying the company of a friendly, intelligent human being, accompanied by beautiful sunsets and unforgettable moments at sea, this is the boat for you! Could not have asked for a better time. Thank you John!
This was like a dream to me not just bcoz of location but also bcoz of host .John is a wonderful jolly natured host likes to talk and share views .Took me to a walk next morning .We shared dinner it was (website hidden) regrets and no complains .wish i had stayed for more than one night .very easy going person will very strongly recommend the place and will visit and stay again when ever i go to LA .Johns Girls friend is very helping and sweet she helped me reach next day to other place and very easy going person .Both are excellent host keep it up john .His boat is very well maintained .Overall experience is 7 star .
We enjoyed an afternoon of sailing, music and good conversation. Not only is John superbly experienced he is great at sharing his knowledge and love for sailing. As an encore to the great afternoon we were further entertained and amazed by literally 100's of dolphins all around. Aquariums, not even Sea World, can compare to the surreal experience of an afternoon in the bay with our warm and humorous docent/ host/ new friend and the ocean life! Thank you John for helping us to manifest a family vacation that many only dream about. We shall return!

I originally inquired about a place to stay, when my plans changed I decided to see if John would be up for taking me and some friends out for a day of sailing, he most certainly was. John was a terrifc host, very accomodating and friendly, eager to get to know us and share stories. He really enjoys sailing and is happy to share is knowledge for those who are curious. We all had a wonderful time and I definitley look forward to my next adventure with captain John.
I was pleasantly surprised to not only find a great deal on a comfortable boat in the harbor, but also a great man with many similar interests.
John helped navigate me on my trip to SoCal then I enjoyed a night filled with conversation from a true intellect.
Great sleeping quarters that were very quiet and serene. I recommend this for the lone traveler who wants to save a buck and get a great experience at the same time. You might even learn something!
Wow, what an amazing trip. John took me sailing and it was definitely something new to me. He is a man of many stories and will gladly share them with you. If you have never sailed, he will teach you! Even with my clumsiness, he had the patience to walk me through it. A friend and I arrived after an awards show let out. It was around midnight and John was more than accommodating at such a late hour! He showed us around and got us settled in. In the morning, he was kind of enough to cook us breakfast and take us out sailing for the entire day. What a day! His boat is furnished just like a house and he has virtually everything you would need. We had lunch in the middle of the ocean as we sailed across the open water. I would love to do this again and John is the person to go to. A very knowledgeable man and extremely friendly. Any questions? Just ask and he will do his best to answer it.
John is a great friendly guy. I stayed at his boat overnight and then he took us sailing the next day. He even gave us eggs and toast with jelly for breakfast! His place is clean and comfortable. All the amenities are available. He has a stove, oven, toaster, microwave, fridge, tv, hot/cold water, etc. John was very hospitable to my friend and I. He took us sailing and we got to see a lot of cool ships, wildlife, bridges, and oil rigs. It was only $50 total for the two of us for a night stay and sailing. That is a great value if you ask me. Good luck trying to find something better because you probably won't. If you've never sailed before, this is the perfect opportunity to do it. It is very relaxing and peaceful plus you see a ton of cool things. I really enjoyed my stay on the boat.
