Beautiful villa but there were a few issues that need to be addressed before I'd stay there again. The whole place smelled of moth balls and must. The kitchen was very dirty, even had some food leftover in the fridge from previous guests I presume? The AC was not working properly in the living area, so you couldn't sit anywhere other than the bedrooms if it was scorching outside. To be fair, we booked very last minute (same day), so that hardly gave them time to clean the place, but I don't think the cleaning is maintained. Also communication with Esi was very poor and minimal. The guy who maintains the place was lovely and apologetic for the AC not working but it was hard to communicate with him (he doesn't speak English) and I wasn't exactly blown away by his cleaning skills! Also there are security cameras all over the house which put us a bit on edge. Even in the bathroom. Felt a bit creepy.
But the place is beautiful- it has a lot of potential and the layout is great. Also good location. 15-20mins walk to the beach, close to some great food (betelnut cafe, roti canai), and a good vibe on that section of the road. The alley is a bit tight for vehicles, FYI if you're planning to get a car ride over.
The villa is exactly as it appears in the photos - nicely landscaped, with large, spacious rooms with high teak-beamed ceilings, fans and air-conditioning, fresh linens and towels were provided regularly during my stay. The pool is a little small (don't think about swimming laps) but wonderful to float in at night and stare up at the stars. Ayu arranged for a driver to collect me, and she and Nur (who lives on the property and looks after the house) did everything they could to help me settle in - arranging scooters, helping with local issues, offering advice. Canggu is best described as a small village - the beach is nearby and there are a bunch of nice cafés, restuarants, etc (Betelnut Café, Deus, La Calita) within walking distance; anything else will require transport.
The villa has a TV, but no cable channels but I brought an AppleTV and that was perfect. The WiFi is suprisingly good for Bali (2Mb up/down). The equipment in the kitchen (as is common in Bali) is basic - a microwave, a 2-ring gas burner but no oven, a large fridge, but it's more than enough for everyday use.
This is a quiet backwater away from the nightclubs and bars of Kuta and Seminyak (which was precisely what I wanted - though a taxi will get you there in 30 mins for those who care to) and an idyllic little retreat.
Villa was quiet and so conveniently located! Seriously, if you don't even want to hire a scooter, you could just walk and be within reasonable distance to beach ('old mans' is great at batu balong beach) and fantastic food- Beatlenut at the end if the driveway, Deus - across the rice field, excellent warang a short stroll past Monsieur Spoon (great choc croissants) where you can eat delish indo food for AU$4. For spa treatments- Therapy in Echo beach- and Hair- for hair cuts obvs. Be aware that power outages are regular in the warmer months- we had two in four nights- but the pool is cool and Beatlenut has a generater! The live in house keeper was so fantastic - very accommodating. We arranged everything from laundry to scooters (and fuel top ups for them...). Pool was amazing too. Very easy to relax here. Would recommend.
After some confusion at check in where there were no cooking facilities in the kitchen, the situation was quickly remedied by Villa manager Nud who made sure we had a two element hob and a large microwave in the kitchen by the end of our first day.
The villa was delightful, clean, quiet and homely and the pool was lovely. The location was great, very close to a number of delicious and well-priced restaurants and only a ten minute walk to Batu Bolong beach.
Ayu came to check that everything was okay at the start of our trip and our live-in helper Nud kept the villa clean and tidy and was on hand for any help we needed.
I would definitely recommend this villa for families or groups who want a relaxing haven in Canggu.
