Hey, I’m Deanna!

Breda, Netherlands · Member since September 2011

I'm originally from the UK but have been off roving for a few years, and am currently based in the Netherlands. I used to develop software for an ISP, but I left my job a few years ago to escape the rat-race and to try to rediscover my own interests and outlook on life. Some of my interests include yoga, running, learning to play the piano, philosophy (particularly eastern) and travelling.

My fiancé is a Dutchman called Matthijs, but please feel free to call him Matt. He is a freelance iOS (iPhone/iPad) developer and writer. He's interested in design, playing the piano and running on his bare feet (!) For the past few years has been very busy creating books and resources to help others learn the programming trade, and he loves it.

We're an easy going, low-key, tidy, non-smoking couple in our thirties. When travelling we prefer to have a comfortable, relaxed place to call home, rather than a hotel. We like to do a mixture of exploring the local area, doing tourist activities, relaxing at home to catch up on work and interests.

Airbnb seemed like the right choice for us when travelling because we don't like being trapped in the tourism bubble where you only meet the smiling people of the service industry. We want to get to know local people to get a grounded view of the country we're visiting. What better way to do that than to live with residents in their homes in real neighbourhoods for a short while? We airbnb'd our way around Australia and it was a fantastic experience and we look forward to discovering more places from this unique vantage point.

Also, access to a proper kitchen and laundry is important to us. There's nothing worse than being confined to a hotel or resort room where there's little or no facilities available to make yourself a decent meal or get your clothes washed. Going out to eat every night is not only hard on the budget but grows tiresome after a while.

There's not much else to say really, except that we look forward to meeting and getting to know you. :)
