Our stay at the Shiva Giri House was amazing. First of all, the house is beautiful and very comfortable. The house is located in a busy area of Kathmandu, but as soon as you go through the gate, you are in an oasis of calm and serenity. The yard is beautiful and even has its own soccer field! There are 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, all of which have showers. There is a full kitchen and kitchen supplies, as well as books, DVDs, videos, and cable (although the only time we used the TV was to watch the US/Germany World Cup Game).
Most important however, is the staff of Shiva Giri. Ashok, Anita, and their daughter Sveta were terrific. They live on the property and were always available to help. Ashok made breakfast every morning, and Anita and Sveta made some meals and laid out the dinners that Chandra (the cook who will make lunch and dinner for $10/day) had made. It was totally wonderful to be there with them, and Chandra, at our request, made a myriad of Nepali meals. She also made great brownies and great cookies. Everything made from scratch. Priti and Nikki manage the photography business and were also wonderful resources on places to go and information in general. Nikki also did all the shopping.
The location of the house is convenient for any area in Kathmandu. Taxis are available outside the gate of the house, and will take you almost anywhere in the city for $2-4. There is a shopping area 2 blocks away with a nice supermarket, as well as cash machines.
Kathmandu has issues with electricity outages everyday, and non-potable water. The house has battery back-up for times when the electricity is out, and also has a UV filtration system for drinking water. Ashok always made sure that bottles of drinking water were available in our rooms and bathrooms.
Overall, staying at the Shiva Giri House was an absolutely wonderful experience. We felt so well taken care of, and so lucky to have an experience in Nepal that was not insulated by a hotel environment. From the moment we arrived until we left, we enjoyed every bit of our stay there. Ashok even met us at the airport with welcome scarves, and rode with us to the house in the pre-arranged car. When we wanted to go on a day trip to three sites outside of the city, Nikki arranged a car and driver for us. We know that the Shiva Giri House is not available all year, but we would stay there anytime we could. It felt like home away from home, and I'd have to say that I haven't had 3 such wonderful meals a day since I left home after high school.
Perfect.. & already submitted for out stay from 9-12 June
The house was perfect for our stay. We enjoyed the space, the peaceful surrounding & the beautiful interior done up in Nepali style.
This house is also well positioned & provides peace & quiet when you need it, & within easy reach of amenities like restaurants & shops etc.
The assistance provided by Nikki Thapa on behalf of Mr. Thomas was really helpful. She arranged a mountain flight for us & we got a magnificent view of Mt Everest. Our daily itinerary was chalked out by her with arrangement of vehicle everyday. She facilitated our stay and was so sweet.
Chandra Shobha's culinary skills are also commendable.
Stay over here is highly recommended.
