If you're looking for something more rural and down home than Ali'i Drive, but you don't want to be too far from Kona town, this is a nice spot.
You get great views of the coast from the mountain-side property, which has several cabins on it, an outdoor kitchen, outdoor toilet and shower (heated!), donkeys, and several friendly dogs and cats.
Chuck let us have free reign and we easily foraged enough papaya, macadamia nuts, lilikoi, and oranges for breakfast, snacks, etc.—foraging was one of our favorite things to do while there. Coffee was on offer most mornings from Chuck, who always seemed to know when to brew up a pot (even when I slept in!).
The accommodations are basic, but I was never uncomfortable— the beds, pillows, bedding, etc. were nice and clean and the cabin was just what we needed, nothing more or less. Perfect.
Chuck is a real score as a host-- he went out of his way to help us get up to the property (picked us up himself), took us to lunch and introduced us to locals, and even took us on drives to places only Hawaiians (with ID checked!) are allowed to go. He even drove us to the airport when we left-- what a guy! He's a character of the friendly and laid-back variety, and is full of Hawaiian history and local knowledge. His enthusiasm about Hawaii and the local area are contagious.
We were on foot (and hitchhiked from Kealakekua to the coast for snorkeling & beachgoing), so we had a different experience than those with cars would. Walking to Kealakekua's main drag wasn't a problem from Chuck’s, it took about 15 minutes. There are no sidewalks, so be aware of that (I put a light--my headlamp on its flashing setting-- on my backpack when I walked it at night). For the record, the hitchhiking was super easy from Kealakekua (and back from, e.g., the Captain Cook monument and Two Step). We consistently got rides super quickly from friendly folks. So don’t be afraid to stay here if you don’t have a car.
Place great, sign us up for "Chuck Whitney Fan Club"(large group,I'd guess!).
Basic,simple,clean,great views & sunsets.Chuck a "good guy"-laidback,generous,multi-talented,etc.We were there 2 weeks;he is sometimes very busy,but if not he might invite on delightful drives/boat trip.Bed /bedding good.Wi-fi always fine.
Some locals(good neighbors) stay there, go to bed about 8pm,arise about 6am .Not a place for late night/partiers.
One reviewer said this was a young backpackers place(&had to buy towels). We got towels, including extra for beach,&were offered more.I'm 67,my wife 46.We usually stay in budget/medium places, but felt VERY HAPPY w/trade-offs of staying here.
Mahalo once again to Chuck.
The description of the place left us a little more optimistic then we should have been. this place is great for young campers but in reality there is no real Bed and breakfast was on our own. a good cleaning and a woman's touch might make it a bit more inviting. we had to buy our own towels and drink glasses. the neighbourhood is nice and convenient. and our host was responsive to our needs.
Chuck was great! He seemed happy to share his knowledge of the area, and he gave us great coffee and fresh fruit in the morning. The accommodations were very basic, but there was a space for cooking, as well as the essentials. Don't expect luxury, while the view and location are fantastic, and the room was clean, the property is basically a construction site and the shower and toilet are outdoors and somewhat exposed. If that kind of scene doesn't deter you then we think you will have a very nice stay. The laid back atmosphere and Chuck's hospitality more than made up for the austere accommodations in our opinion.
Was a nice place with a beautiful view of the Kona Coast. Our Host was very nice and guided us to the cabin all in the dark. He gave us an amazing tour of his place in the morning. The cabin was small and cozy, and it was a unique experience.
Chuck was a great host and very friendly. The view was spectacular and the accommodations were simple. The location was very safe and private (gated) and I enjoyed the number of animals and pets on the premises. Chuck greeted me with coffee and let me pick papayas off his trees. I would certainly recommend the Kona cabins to anyone wanting a low key accommodation. Close to downtown and the magic sand beach.
Chuck was very down to earth and a great host. Greeted me with a great cup of coffee every morning. The location is just enough out of Kona where you are away from the crowds, which were big at this time of year. In a quiet neighborhood with an excellent view. If you are looking for high price luxury, this is not it. If you are looking for a nice down to earth, real Hawai'i experience, this would be where you want to stay. A little difficult to find at first, but Chuck was readily available to direct me there. I hope to get back to the area and visit again.
Chuck was kind enough to show me around kona and I had a great time staying at his place! He helped me and my friend to do shopping etc and he was very friendly and patient for us.
Thank you so much for your hospitality!
In the midst of a hectic day of driving, Chuck's friendliness and ease was such a breath of fresh air! I immediately felt very welcome. I needed to change my reservation dates due to a scheduling error on my part, and (to my great relief) Chuck was quick to accommodate, with no fuss and no extra charge. The view from the cabins is incredible, and the location ideal for exploring both downtown and the awesome things on the upper mountain area of South Kona/Captain Cook. The facilities are a little on the rustic side, but perfectly comfortable, and conducive to a really cool experience. Thanks for a great stay, Chuck!
Chuck was a welcoming and generous host! The location is great for accessing Kailua or anywhere in the Kona region. The accommodations are rustic and it's nice to hear Chuck talk about his plans for the place.
