This was my first airbnb experience, so naturally I had a few questions prior to arrival. I was also checking possible accommodations for others thus more questions.
I only called Paul 1 time upon arrival, after I tried getting help from the front desk to help with the sofa bed and was told the suite was NOT part of the hotel, so they couldn't help me.
I emailed Paul 2 times - once to tell him about the faint odd smell my friend and I both smelled when we first got there, to ask if there was supposed to be a TV in the bedroom because I didn't see it though it had been advertised (and I didn't want to be blamed later if it was supposed to be there, and it wasn't), and ask about where the fan switch was in the bathroom (more for the benefit of his property). I did not receive a reply to that email.
I wrote again when after returning from being out the 2nd evening, we were hit with a really strong, foul, offensive odor, like a dead animal, coming from the kitchen. It was already quite late by then, we were tired and we both had to get up early for our flights the next morning. We didn't feel it was our place to have to figure out what the problem was and to fix it. (Read my review for more details.) I had also already been told before by the front desk that they could not help me, so calling them was not an option. Paul replied with an email only on the morning I was leaving.
I asked to be compensated twice - for the hassle of dealing with the sofa bed which was really challenging and a strain for me to pull out by myself as my friend had health issues and couldn't help, and for the really bad stench which was totally unacceptable.
And YES there was definitely something wrong in that place. We were there, Paul wasn't. We had not used the kitchen at all except to heat up water for tea, so there was no food that we put in the garbage disposal or in the trash that was smelling up the place so badly. If there was a dead animal in there, I certainly didn't want to be the one to find it.
Aside from the foul smell, the most unpleasant part was my interaction with Paul. His emails to me after leaving were condescending.. you can detect some of it in the tone of his review and not about making sure I had a pleasant stay there as his guest. He never apologized for anything. It was definitely not "fun" for me to spend the night with that gross smell.
So the "more emails and phone calls" turns out to be 2 emails and 1 phone call while there. "Asking for "money back" for anything that could be found" turns out to be 2 times for very specific reasons, and not just anything. I was told by the hotel's front desk that this suite was NOT part of the hotel, so I'm not sure what Paul is referring to when he wrote "most other guests (at a hotel) would have called the front desk for." There was definitely something wrong with the suite when we stayed there.
I'm not sure what Paul means by saying I'm on a mission. I will speak up if something is wrong or has been misrepresented.. and I will call him out if he continues to misrepresent what actually happened.
I would be curious to find out what his cleaning people found to be the cause of the smell.
