Stef van der Bijl was born in 1981 in Deventer, the Netherlands. May not be the most exciting town in the country but for Stef, it was mostly his environment that inspired his creative, young mind. As a child, Stef made his imagination real by building entire cities and cars from mere Lego’s. With an artist mother and a father in the automobile industry, it was hard for him not to be stimulated by his surroundings. Stef was raised with a passion for cars and a devotion to art that ultimately lead to his profession later on in life. After educating himself at the art academy in photography and business, Stef started working at the gallery of Droog Design and became a freelancer for Maurits Simonette. Inspired by these experiences and Dutch Design in general, Stef launched his own design initiative in re-using existing materials calling it, vanderBijl design & interior in 2005.
vanderBijl design & interior’s first project was naturally a combination of his two passions: DJ-ing and classic Volkswagen vans: Stef bought a VW ‘hippie’ Van and transformed it into a DJ Bus. This was such a huge success for the up and coming vanderBijl design & interior, that Stef was asked by Red Bull to design and build the Red Bull (email hidden). In 2006 and 2007, Stef was designing DJ booths and bars for Red Bull as well as creating a collection of re-styled antique Surgery Lamps called the ‘Surgery Light Collection’ for interior use. These lamps were sanded and then mirror-polished, so that their beautiful naked skin could be exposed.
Straight out of Dubai, Desert River came calling to vanderBijl design & interior in 2008 asking Stef to create the ultimate Event Van: A 1967 VW Van re-designed into a cocktail bar and DJ booth, named ‘Lola’. Once completed, this became (and still is) a huge hit in the United Arabic Emirates. However, during the process of building ‘Lola’, Stef dreamed up the idea to create the ultimate luxury entertainment object: A Rolls-Royce re-designed into a champagne bar and DJ booth appropriately named ‘The Lady of Luxury’.
‘The Lady of Luxury’ took him 2 years to re-build and re-design and since it’s debut it is has been traveling the world. Stef’s ‘Lady’ is the only one of her kind on the globe.
In 2011 vanderBijl design & interior moved to Amsterdam choosing a beautiful, old loft as a place to design, live, create, invigorate, enjoy, entertain and most of all to do inspiring business.
2012: the year of collaboration. vanderBijl design & interior will create an exclusive label for Kenas Furniture. Stef is designing a unique collection of lamps and other interior objects that will be sold worldwide.
Timeless luxury with a raw edge
VanderBijl design & interior prides itself on making timeless pieces that are inspired by nature and the industrial (website hidden)-design the existing instead of producing the new
In every piece that vanderBijl produces you will find a great passion for old and glorious times in our history coupled with natural processes like rust and raw wood. The combination of these characteristics result in a fantastic eternal contrast.
A new design doesn’t necessarily need a new shape. It can be inspired by existing shapes or objects in a new context. Original antique objects are constantly being integrated into Stef’s work making most of the vanderBijl designs exclusive.
So is it Art or Design?
Influenced by aviation, classic cars and boats, Stef combines classical shapes with modern luxury and throws in a raw edge. Every single design needs a contrast in shape, color, finish or material to get the character, making his designs one-of-a-kind.
The power of collaboration
By working strictly with professionals and specialists worldwide, vanderBijl design & interior can design and realize interiors, DJ booths, cars, boats, lamps, couches, tables and bars. You name it, we design it.
As the designer, Stef is the link between the wishes of the client and those who produce the designs. Jan Meeuwissen is Stef’s partner in crime when it comes to business. As his right hand and business partner, he will streamline and structure vanderBijl design & interior.
