Avid outdoors person who loves yoga, meditation and hangin' out with my lovely family.
Casa Sophia is the PERFECT home for a quiet getaway. The house is spacious and has a big back yard with a play structure for kids, a big back porch with a chiminea and grill, and a hot tub. The neighborhood is quiet and the houses aren't built on top of another, as they tend to be in Guerneville. The drive to the center of Guerneville is only about seven minutes, so you have access to all Guerneville has to offer.
I would highly recommend this home!
Casa Sophia is the quintessential escape! Imagine yourself sitting on a beautiful deck, surrounded by the majestic redwoods of the northern California coast, sipping wine and enjoying the warmth of a chiminea. That's what you will experience in this quaint little house within view of the Russian River. Our trip was a group of 6 girls' intending to get away from life, family and kids for the weekend. There is plenty of room for everyone, and a floor plan that suites coziness, but with space. Our first night, we fired up the deck BBQ and made a few appetizers, but later in the night were also close enough to the nearby city of Guerneville to gather a few more snacks (and wine!). The following day, we planned our wine tasting schedule and had among hundreds of some of the best wineries to choose from...all within a short drive from the house. After our day of wine tasting, we needed some true (email hidden)aking in the brand new spa was the answer (on the deck overlooking the forest)...once again lost in the beauty of this place. As the weather turned colder that night, we retreated inside and gathered around the warmth of the wood-burning fireplace. We wish we would have had more time to stay as Casa Sophia is situated in such an ideal location that we could have taken advantage of heading to the coast (only 20 minutes away), shopping in downtown Healdsburg (30 minutes or so), or strolling the streets of quirky Guerneville...only 5 minutes away.
We will return to Casa Sophia no doubt. Charming...with all the comforts you would hope for. Highly recommended!!!!
We’ve spent time at Casa Sophia on multiple occasions with groups of friends and on our own. It is a haven from the busyness of life, and we can’t help but slow down as soon as we arrive. The house is spacious, and the lay out flows really well. It's equipped with all amenities, including anything you'll need to prepare a big breakfast or host a dinner party. The wood burning stove adds to the cozy factor, and on warmer days, time seems to stand still when sitting on the deck surrounded by redwoods. On our last trip, we even arranged for a massage therapist come to the house for a 90-minute massage in front of the fire (and left her card for anyone who’s interested).
Favorite outings include early morning kayaking on the Russian River, visiting nearby towns like Graton, Occidental, and Freestone, walking on Goat Rock Beach (Jenner), and buying oysters or crabs on the coast, dining at Boon or the Big Bottom Market in Guerneville. Next trip we’ll bike to Armstrong Woods.
Skeeter is very responsive and super helpful when we have questions. Bottom line is Casa Sophia is fantastic all around, and we’re already planning two more visits in the coming months (if available, of course).
The house is a great escape and the welcome instructions perfect. Skeeter went out of her way to make sure it was a home-away-from-home. It was just two of us, but the guest book shows that Casa Sophia hosts much bigger parties. They even have a cork jar that has inspired us to see some wineries that we didn't know about.
The location is perfect for exploring west sonoma county and Geurneville. It was rainy and the house provided a great location to be quiet and watch the Olympics.
The neighborhood is great and a few neighbors even say hello as we walked the local golf course. We'll certainly plan another stay soon.
My wife Trish and I have been fortunate to make many trips up to Casa Sophia and have experienced her in all seasons. Summer steals the show with long days, warm floats on the Russian River, and late evenings on the porch, staring up mesmerized by how high above you the redwood canopy is. Fall is a great time to explore wine country as the vines turn color and the long list of nearby wineries is longer than you'll ever have time to fully explore. In even the worst winter weather, Casa Sophia is a comfy nest. Curling up by the fireplace with a great book, taking a rainy walk in nearby Armstrong Woods, and making a feast of a breakfast in the spacious and well-stocked kitchen are Winter highlights. Spring is a time to get back out and adventure. Hop on your bike for a leisurely ride down to Monte Rio or an epic challenge of the Kings Ridge Loop.
We have enjoyed Casa Sophia both as a romantic get-away for just the two of us and as a hub for a group of friends up to enjoy the area. The home has a way of adapting to whatever it is you are looking for.
And, of course, I can't conclude a review without saying something about the hosts. Skeeter has been a dear friend from the moment I met her 25 years ago! Skeeter, her wife Alex, and their child Danny are family to me and my wife!
Casa Sophia - so, so wonderful. I have known Alex and Skeeter for years and have stayed at their home many times, and I always come home smiling and wishing I could have stayed longer. The house is great for a group of up to 6 people, or a couple more if folks are willing to sleep on an airbed. It's peaceful, quiet, and the back deck is perfect for reading, sitting in the sun, or a small dinner party. Finally, you can't get better hostesses than Alex and Skeeter: they are simply the best. The only thing you may regret is not booking far enough in advance. Enjoy!
I have had many, many opportunities to enjoy Skeeter's and Alex's hospitality, and they are fabulous hosts. Their genuine care and consideration for their guests shows in their thoughtful attention to details at Casa Sophia and in their concern for each of their guest's experience while at Casa Sophia. They are a wealth of knowledge about the Russian River area, able to provide many recommendations for your itinerary in this beautiful part of the world. Casa Sophia itself is a magical spot in the redwoods with a fantastic deck for spending special days and evenings bonding with nature and your friends. The home has a great location, near golf, wineries, the ocean and all of the things that make the area exite the senses as it does. If you are fortunate enough to stay at Casa Sophia, the home, the area and your hosts are sure to give you fond memories.
Skeeter and Alex are great hosts; they are easy to contact and on top of everything. They are both lovely people who are laid back and helpful despite being hyper-planners. And Casa Sophia is a great escape. You really feel like you are in the Woods even though it is only a few minutes to Monte Rio or Guernville. I've rented the property for solo writing projects and family get-togethers and I always love it.
We've often considered Casa Sophia a home away from home. Rent this spot, you'll love it. Skeeter is a great host and always looking to improve the Casa through feedback, but they need little because have created a lovely haven for rest and relaxation or a space to launch adventures in Sonoma Wine Country, the Russian River or the beautiful Sonoma Coast. It sleeps 6 comfortably, and an air bed pushes that to 8. The back deck is perfect for a dinner in your own private Redwood oasis.
Skeeter and I have known each other for years, and I have stayed at her cottage as both a guest and a renter. The house is great- charming and quiet, yet close enough to things that you are near whatever you need. And a great balance between rustic charm and having all of the amenities you would want for your stay. Not to mention the awesome back deck with giant redwoods in the yard- great spot to sit with a fire all evening with friends and wine.
I can't imagine a better person to rent from than Skeeter. You will have a great experience working with her- she will be very professional and courteous, and is incredibly kind and honest as well.
