We moved here in 2007 when we fell in love with this part of the Island of Hawaii. I grew up in Hawaii, but then spent many years traveling abroad. Now we are excited to be the hosts, and have you experience the true beauty of this place.

We arrived late the night of check-in and Robert kindly stayed up, made sure we got in safe and gave us a quick tour of the house. Robert was very easy to get a hold of. This house is spacious and has admirable craft work by Robert himself. He is very knowledgeable and will offer up useful information when you ask questions. The drive to this house is beautiful! This is place is close to amazing tide pools; we felt like we got a good feeling of Hawaiian life on the Big Island.
This country house is impressive with its woodworking, done by the host himself. I had a great time there with one other guest. You are really surrounded by nature with lots of trees and at nighttime, you hear a lot of forest sounds. Was able to go to Volcanoes National Park and Mauna Kea during our time at this place; it is approx 45 min drive to Hilo for reference. Robert was also kind enough to lend us an umbrella (it was pouring rain when we got there).
The host are really a sweet couple ...the house is exactly as described really calm surrounding in the more jungle part of the island . You can ear the sound of nature and ocean at all time ...relaxing place and so we'll build by the owner who is a wood magician ... Wait till you see those stairs it will make you want to start building your own house !!
This place was gorgeous. All the woodwork in the house was hand-made by Robert, and it's truly a work of art! It's also very comfortable and well-designed to make the most of the awesome views and island breezes. Robert was a welcoming host without being intrusive, and the property is fairly close to the tide pools, warm ponds, etc. Although the house is not far distance-wise from Pahoa, it feels pretty remote. Getting there involves driving for a few miles on a dirt road through the jungle (no 4wd needed). I would recommend arriving during daylight hours, as it could be difficult driving there for the first time in the dark.
Robert's house was a great spot for exploring the big island. It is beautifully designed, with tons of unique details and locally-sourced materials. It is near a bunch of places to go swimming, and about an hour from Volcanoes National Park. Robert welcomed us and was responsive to our questions. Highly recommended.
We had a wonderful stay at this place. We really felt like we stayed in the country with the lush vegetation all around us. Robert was such a welcoming and warm host. We recommend this place to anyone. The house was very clean and comfortable. He really built a piece of art worth a visit to the big island.
Beautiful house in a beautiful location. Robert and his family were very warm and welcoming. He gave us lots of tips on how to best explore the Puna area. The house was quiet, scenic, and comfortable, with a great view of the ocean and stars. We would highly recommend staying here!
We wished we could have stayed longer, this is a great location to get to Hilo for a fun dinner or over to Volcano for the National Park. The home is right next to the coast, and if we'd had one more day we would have liked to stroll along the quiet coastal road or visited the hot ponds in Puna, they looked amazing! Robert was very available and incredibly helpful when I had a small medical issue. We would definitely stay here again!
My wife and I had a great time at this lodging and location. Landlords Robert & Irene were available as necessary, in person or by phone, and very nice and helpful for answering questions, but in no way intrusive on our experience. Location in the rainforest seemed isolated which was just what we wanted, but was near enough but not too close to shopping, lava flows, beaches, entertainment and restaurants. We didn't spend a ton of time in the unit, but enjoyed it when we did. Kitchen and bathrooms were fully adequate. Lighting for reading books was just adequate but good enough. They were kind enough to schedule dry days for us, except for the very last one of seven, and only occassional rain at night.
I have a finicky back, but their mattress was perfect (firm, but no too firm). Water heater was limited, but we never minded this at all.
We'd return in future, for sure!
We stayed for a few days in November. Robert was a great host and the property was GORGEOUS and remote. We got in a little later than we wanted to and it was no problem for him. The space is just lovely and had a few guidebooks that we utilized. It was a great location for lava watching, warm tide pool swimming and rainforest exploring. the roof deck was lovely, the hammock was great. A truly great space for a couple.
