Easy to miss on Hanover Street, but impossible to forget once you've visited! If you have trouble finding it, it is next door to clothing shop Miss Selfridge. This basement bar is totally unique. Unusual drinks menu and fun and games! Buy tokens at the bar and exchange them for an alcoholic ice-cream from a retro vending machine. Also - alcohol slushies! Fun murals on the walls and somewhat 1950s vibe. Great eclectic music selection.

This has been a favourite of mine since my teens. Charming place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Stop in after sight-seeing for a break. Cakes, shortbread, quiche, soup, sandwiches and more. Lots of vegetarian options. Excellent selection of loose leaf teas (chamomile is particularly good) and coffees. Beer and wine, too. Live music some nights. Open daily till 10pm or 11pm. It can get busy due to being close to the Royal Mile, and also because it is now branded 'the Birthplace of Harry Potter' - Edinburgh resident JK Rowling wrote much of her first Potter book in the café! If you're a fan, pop in for a t-shirt and check out the Harry Potter inspired graffiti in the toilets!

Entertainment & Activities

I have a lot of love for the Cameo. This is a beautiful cinema which is 100+ years old! In the Tollcross area, close to Edinburgh University. You can get there easily from the Airbnb by taking the 23 or 27 bus on Dundas Street. The Cameo is at the Home Street stop. Showing new releases from international cinema and old classics. Discounted prices available for students & senior citizens. Disabled access & disabled parking with a Blue Badge. Plus Cameo cinema bar for coffee and a chilled-out atmosphere. Children and babies are welcome until 8.00, with high chairs and a toy box for you to enjoy! Free Wifi available. Regular film quiz - usually the 3rd Tuesday of the month.

Edinburgh Zoo is a fantastic place to take the kids for the day. Visit the penguins, giant panda, koalas, birds, monkeys, tigers zebras and more! Don't miss the Penguin Parade - it's a firm favourite. A world-class zoo on 82 acres of land. Check the zoo website for details of event times. There are places to eat in the zoo, but I would recommend bringing a packed lunch and snacks for everyone. Lots of walking involved and the zoo is quite hilly in parts, so you'll want plenty of snacks and drinks to keep everyone going as you visit the animals.

Restored Victorian swimming pool, gym and more. If you're looking to relax, don't miss the Turkish baths! Relax in the steam room where the high humidity will open pores, penetrate the respiratory system and ease tense muscles before you take a bracing dip in the plunge pool. Then work your way through three hot chambers - Tepidarium (warm), Calidarium (hot) and Laconium (hottest) - allowing the warmth to continue its therapeutic effect on the muscles and skin. Repeat the cycle as often as you wish before cooling down in the Frigidarium.
