Tips from locals
Lovely gardens in a secluded & sheltered valley with a great Tea Rooms too! Excellent venue for a Devon Cream Team at the end of a hard day at the beach. Small fee to visit the gardens but entry to the Tea Rooms is free.
“THE BEST CREAM TEA” You can’t beat the surroundings of the secluded courtyard garden, old water wheel and sound of the mill stream when indulging. The owners have opened their gardens to view for a small entry fee, it’s worth allocating an hour to stroll around, the spring and summer boarders…
Lovely nine acre garden surrounding a mill house, mill pond and river. Cream teas and light lunches available.
These stunning gardens are always a very popular choice for visitors looking for a day out. The gardens are beautiful and only 2 miles from Apple Pippin. The tea room at Doctor Mill is worthy of a visit in itself and the cream teas in particular are amazing!

“The closest beach to Down Barton & owned by the National Trust (No Parking Fees apply) Welcombe Mouth is one of the gems of the North Devon Coast. Access is via an unmetalled track to the small car park and then a rough path down to the beach itself. It's within easy walking distance (Downhill all the way!) but if you are taking lot's of beach equipment we would suggest you drive. During high season we would also recommend getting there early to make sure of securing a parking space. A pebbly foreshore gives way to series of sandy strips that run down to the sea at low tide, often combining to make a large sandy area. At low tide there are numerous rock pools to explore South towards Marsland Mouth or North to secluded bays. Please check the local tide times before setting off on explorations as there is no access to the coastpath from the beaches north of Welcombe. Please also note there is no lifeguard cover at Welcombe Mouth. Late or early in the holiday season you can often spend a few hours on the beach with it completely to yourself. We have spent many happy days here.”
