Why locals recommend it
This is where the party never ends in New Orleans. It gets very crowded on weekends and even more so on holidays and Mardi Gras. A lot of drunk people. And a lot of weird things happen here. Be safe, and always have a buddy system.
Tips from locals
If your looking for great food, big drinks, or unique bars to hang out , look no further that Bourbon St! With it's historical background, its a definite must see if your in New Orleans.
Bourbon Street is an experience, and you should definitely walk down it with a hand grenade (it's a drink, you'll see what I mean) at least once. That might be enough for you, or it might be your scene. The most common New Orleans advice I see is to wear closed-toe shoes if you're on Bourbon, since…
Not necessarily a local favorite but you kinda have to spend a night out on Bourbon Street if you've never been here before...
Go here for an evening, 2 max, you'll have a great time, just don't wake the neighbors when you come back at 3AM ;)

“With bar after bar rocking with some of the city’s most talented musicians and performers, this is no doubt the preferred “street” by residents. You’ll definitely want to spend an entire night barhopping from The Spotted Cat, to d.b.a. to Snug Harbor and more. Highly recommended for people who want to experience New Orleans without the craziness of Bourbon Street ”
