Why locals recommend it

I occasionally go here at night, sit on the steps, and just observe the reflection pool along with the Washington Monument in the night sky. I honestly think the experience is better at night. There’s usually college aged adults and small groups of tourists around even at 1am.

Despite its appearance on the penny and the $5 bill, the Lincoln Memorial is perhaps most recognisable as the site of historic demonstrations. In 1939, when the Daughters of the American Revolution barred the African-American contralto Marian Anderson from singing in their Constitution Hall, she performed for more than 75,000 people from these steps. It was here that Martin Luther King delivered his "I have a dream" speech in 1963. Just a few months later, President Lyndon Johnson led candle-carrying crowds in ceremonies concluding national mourning for John F. Kennedy.

(3.5 miles) The best time to visit is Martin Luther King Day when many children read aloud his most famous speeches. It combines the best of Lincoln’s Presidency and the modern world’s continuation of his struggles. The stalagmite and stalactite underground tour is memorable and cold during the hot summers. This is a little known tour by the US Parks Service.
