New Orleans is famous for our above-ground mausoleum filed cemeteries. The most famous cemetery is located near The French Quarter (St Louis #1) where you can see Marie Laveau's grave. It is required to be part of a tour for St Louis #1. There are a large number of Cemeteries in this neighborhood as well, and can be accessed by taking the Canal Streetcar line in the opposite direction from the French Quarter. These cemeteries don't require a tour group, and include the giant Metairie Cemetery (home of Al Coplands owner of Popeyes Fried Chicken).

Many people come to New Orleans just to tour the historic cemeteries. Headstones date back hundreds of years and a guided tour is a true educational experience.

Cemeteries- You can take an official tour of the above ground tombs, or you can just walk past them and see them from the outside. Most gates are wrought iron, so you can see directly into the cemetery. They're all over the city, but the ones within walking distance are on Canal St.
