EN: This historic building, built on the site where it worked, is presumed to be the first European Slave Market in the 19th century, is now a museum that uses technology to tell us the history of slavery in Portugal. A small but very well organized space that conveys the historical testimony of past events. Um espaço pequeno mas muito bem organizado e que nos transmite o testemunho histórico dos acontecimentos passados.

Interesting for understanding Lagos' history related with slave trading, a common practice centuries ago.

The Mercado de Escravos (Slave Market) is a historical building in Lagos, in the Faro District of Portugal. It is located on the site where the first slave market in Europe of the modern era took place, in 1444. The building was first used for military administration and, later, as a customs house. In 2016, the whole building was occupied by a museum dedicated to the story of slavery.

Portugese sailers were merchants and masters at the seas. When slaves were exported to America from Africa they saw a commercial opportunity and started to transport the slaves. At this market slaves were sold and bought. It's a black page of history but one that has to be told. The name of our city 'Lagos' became also the name of the big city in Nigeria where most of the slaves came from.

Mercado de Escravos (Slave Market) Slaves brought back from the African continent in 1444 were sold here in what is held to be the site of Europe’s first slave market. The ground floor of the building now houses an art gallery.
