Why locals recommend it
This is the definitive San Francisco arthouse cinema, where the most experimental, strangest, most unique programming takes place. There are so many strange and little films I am grateful I saw here. It’s also a regular location for countless other SF film festivals. It’s no frills, no glitz and glam. But it’s colorful. It’s kind of like going to a dive bar with a bartender who’s been doing the same drink for 50 years. You don’t ask questions, you just experience it. And then when you walk out, you’re like, man, that was amazing.
Tips from locals
It is a little independent movie theater showing old and new movies at all times. You won't find blockbusters here.
Nobody does fleapit better than this place with indie movies to illuminate and excite.
The Roxie theater is a classic - showing off-beat, foreign, anime, documentary, etc. films. Excellent popcorn! You can also buy beer and wine.

“This old-school movie palace has been a fixture in the Castro neighborhood since 1922. The grand interior and signature pre-show organ music are worth the price of admission alone — but stick around for their ever-changing roster of classic films, spirited sing-alongs, and rotating film festivals. Absolutely one of our favorite destinations in SF!”
